What could cause noise with increased revs?

One of my mechanics said it could be from putting regular oil in it accidentally for a couple months when I should have put semi synthetic. I believe he said it was the lifters or something like that and that it is not fixable but I can try putting some Lucas oil additive in it to quiet it down.

One of my other mechanics suggests the sound it coming from under the engine near the transmission and the only way to know is to take it apart.

I haven't paid for any in depth inspections so I don't know for sure, these are just some opinions they had without looking too heavily into it.
