Default no start problem 97 honda civic non vtec

Hello my friend has a 97 civic dx non vtec 1.6 motor. Today his car would not start. The starter cranks but does not turn over ( like no spark to get it going).

The hazard lights work, i hear the fuel pump.. so that means main relay is good right?

We tried to push start the car and we got some progress, the car turns on then quickly dies out, gets to about 600 to 800 rpm then dies out.

Could this be a distributor problem?

Also at one point the car did not turn on at all. That was bad ground and power connections for the battery.. we fixed that.. there was paint on the connections.

Thanks

When my non vte didn't wanna start i changed main relay, fuel pump and turned out it was the ecu. Test ecu with a good ecu and see if it starts. If so then that's the problem
