Default Spark Plug Replacements - Turbo Set Ups

After how many passes do YOU change your plugs? And I am referring to moderate to high horse power *TURBO* cars (400hp +) Not your daily driver with low boost.

I've seen a few cars bog down the track, they replace the plugs, and problem solved. But most of these people do not keep track of their passes.

You should be checking your plugs in between passes IMO. on a fresh motor I check my plugs every pass. Once the motor has some miles on it and tuning is spot on I check my plugs every couple of runs unless it had a misfire or just didnt feel right on a pass then plugs get pulled immediatly.

I've gone 15k miles on a set of BKR7E plugs at 400whp. When i put the new plugs in it ran better but it still ran good and got good MPG with the old worn plugs. they prob would have lasted longer but at 1.60 a plug not worth leaving them in the car. Now if your talking Iridium plugs (which you dont need for that power level) they technically will last longer but should still be inspected after each pass or every couple of passes. If the plugs show any signs of wear or detonation or anything they should be changed out and if detonation you should be cleaning that problem up in your tune and reading your logs.

the guys pulling them every pass, are you killing the motor and pulling them at the end of the track or driving down the return road, through the pits then pulling them?

We change plugs everytime the car gets back to the pits. Only time we dont change is if we have to hot lap, even then well run plugs to the lanes to see if we could change them.

Why chance a bad run with fouled plugs?

Unusually drive back and look for physical issues. If you want the real fuel story then shut down and check when you stop.

I pull them after every pass to check them, but usually get 2 runs from a set.

Sounds like a lot of money in plugs alone! Something I hadn't thought of!

Run your car, when it gets slow change the plugs, if it fixes it, that's how often you should change them.

I use ik24 plugs around $9 each, and don t want to change them every 2runs!

First because I need to gap them and after because it Costs me a lot!

Why do you change so often them?

Well I finally got burned.... I used the set for 5 1/8th mile passes on 04/25 went home took them off and put them away.

Last night on my 4th pass they went out and the car ran sluggish. So 8 passes I think is good for my set up, but more than likely they will be changed every 7 passes to be on the safe side.

I use the BKR7E's on my integra and I drive around the street with 440+whp and ran them for over a year but that was with no track time. Turning up the boost to around 600+ I would check them every run. If your looking to keep it a street car don't use the 8's as I tried them out and as soon as I put them in the car they made the car idle like ****. Infact, the car would die on me if the car was in natural. Swapped a new set of 7's and that all went away.

Unless you are running a leaded fuel, its a huge waste to change plugs all the time IMO. Pull clean gap reinstall.
