Default annoying exhaust rasp. ugh...

i think we all know that bllllaaaattttt raspy/ tin rattling sound that honda exhausts can make. i just cant believe im having problems with it. worst part is it happens between 2500 and 3000 rpm so i pretty much cant avoid it.

motor is a b20b. exhaust is a edelbrock header with collector mod, 2.25" magnaflow cat, 2.25 vibrant flex section, 2.25" vibrant resonator 18" length placed in the middle of the mid pipe, 2.25" magnaflow straight through muffler. the piping itself is a kteller weld up, again 2.25"

with the cat, resonator, and only 2.25 piping i figured it wouldnt make that noise.

would an exhaust leak really make it worse? theres a small chance that flex section is **** and leaks a bit. how can i clean this up, i like the sound of the exhaust besides this noise

u might want to go with a different muffler, possibly one that is not straight through. it's funny, but I can tell u that different headers actually creates a different tone.

sounds like a leak where check the flex section first. could also be something lose rattleing around look into those first

Got a cold air intake or short ram? I have a gsr swapped hatch w 60mm yonaka WS-2 catback with plm hytech header. I added a cat then a 24" dynomax bullet resonator and still couldn't get rid of the rasp. I replaced my cold air intake for a stock ITR box and tube and zero rasp now. The resonance caused by the smooth tubing of a cai or Sri is enough to cause the rasp you hear.

Sounds like the baffles in the resonator or muffler could have rusted out, if you are now noticing it, and it wasn't that way originally. A "rasp" would be from an exhaust leak, that has a distinct sound.

everything is brand new. i just welded it up a few weeks ago. its been like this from the get go. i used one of these magnaflow mufflers on my old all motor b20 with no twanging rasp, but that was a 2" not 2.25:...

currently just using a short ram 2.5" intake. this is just temporary until i put in my lsvtec and make a 3" intake for that motor.

Straight-through mufflers sound like that. Perhaps try a mellow sounding Flowmaster.

If the resonator is not filled well (I mean burned out) it is raspy... he should check... easy fix.

Edit: lol, it is new
Then it is not sized properly.

OP just said everything was brand new, so that's unlikely.

My money is on a leak. If you have a welding shop nearby, you can buy a leak-detection liquid that you can squirt on the joints and it will bubble up if you have any leaks (while the engine is running of course). Soapy water can work in a pinch too.

its from your resonator. Its not capable of resonance at that rpm's frequency. Think of a reed in a wind instrument. When you over power the reed, you are exceeding its resonant response and under powering the reed , you are not meeting the resonant response. either end of the frequency will cause resonate frequencies to be uncontrollable ones.

Placement, length and type of material in a resonator makes all the difference. Cheap "muffler/resonator" types use fiberglass and a tube with holes in it. Quality "resonators" are made with a ruffled tube with holes and stainless steel mesh.

reviving this thread from the dead....I have a 98 Integra. Exhaust has always had a raspy sound. Thought it was just the resonator, but the dealership told me I have a header collector leak. I don't think they make collector replacements, so my only bet is to get a new set of headers or a good weld job? Would that be accurate?

Thanks,

That post can be taken 2 way.
1)There is a leak at the collector as in the gasket is broken/no good
or
2)the header is actually broken/cracked

Which is it?

^ I wish I could tell you. All the dealership told me was that I have a header collector leak. They wrote on the multi-point insp sheet "header collector leak" & marked it "may require future attention". I just assumed he meant the actual collector part of the header. If it were gasket, I would think they would write down "gasket"...perhaps? It probably wouldn't have hurt to confirm. They also said noted on the insp sheet that I have a small oil leak and the mechanic wrote "oil pan gasket"...see what I'm saying? Again, it probably wouldn't have hurt to confirm. Your point is valid, I just assumed from all the stuff that was written down.
