Default 90 Interga Ls Cam Rocker Moves at Valve Adjusting Nut!!!! Video Inside

Alright i did a search but found nothing that pretains to my situation. We took the valve cover off his stock b18a1 integra today that he just bought and we was just checking to see what the cams looked like and to see if they was damaged just for the hell of it and we noticed that when you touch the valve adjustment nut the whole rocker moves. The only ones that doesnt move is where the cam lobes are truned and putting pressure the rocker. Somebody please help and tell me if they are suppose to do this personally ive never seen it as much as i work on hondas and this just might be one of those things i havnt came a across yet but please help an check out the video we are deterimed to fix it. Could it just need a valve adjustment? Car runs fine dispite the ignition timing is advanced about 24degree and valves doesnt seem to tick any.

PS. When we were going to adjust the ignition timing we could get the check engine light to come on when we jumped the service connector so we could adjust it, the cel works everytime the car cranks up so i know its not a bulb, what could cause this to happen?

any help apreciated thanks

The ball style rockers move like that when the valves are closed. You could try adjusting them but they will always move a little. At least they have in all the older preludes I've owned. You're prob used to working on newer engines with shaft mounted rockers.

Yeah, that's just how they are. The rockers are just sitting there. There isn't actually anything holding them onto the engine besides the lash adjustment. If the lash is loose enough, I'm pretty sure the rockers can actually pop out.

I actually can get my lash adjusted pretty close just by feeling how much play there is in the rocker. I set one rocker using feeler gauges, then just go by feel pulling the rocker arm up and down till it feels right, tighten it down, then double check it with the feeler gauge. 9/10 times I get it perfect.

I bought an 88 prelude with no compression a few years ago for a 5 speed swap. Out of curiosity I pulled the vc to check the engine out. Guy before me adjusted all the valves so there was no clearance. 9 valves bent and 3 rockers popped out. Works both ways.

Okay thanks guys!!! You've saved what we thought was going to be a big headache but we are still going to do a valve lash adjustment tomorow just be on the safe side bc who knows what previous owners did or didnt do.

But i still have a problem getting the check engine light to come on when i jump the service connector, the cel works everytime you trun the key on but doesnt light up when jumping the connector and we need it fix so we can adjust the ignition timing bc previous owner has it advanced way past 18 degrees BTDC its at about 23-24 degrees now. Any idea what causing it not to light up when jumping it????

Thanks to All Honda Tech memebers!

That does sound strange. The FSM states to start the car THEN short the jumper plug.

I never bother with any of that. These cars have electronic timing advance, so I just set it to roughly zero (going off the top bolt, I center the dizzy on adjustment slot)

My car always runs great just like that.

Also, despite the light not coming on, have you tried hitting it with a timing light anyways while you adjust it? if it truly is not going into service mode, when you try to adjust the timing when it idles, instead of smoothly going from advance or retard, it'll jump around all crazy like.

bump.

Yea that what i did, i jumped it with the car on thats the first thing we did after the car got compltetly warm but nothing happened with it crunk or off. And im pertty sure adjusting the timing with the service plug not jumped want do any good bc want the ecu try and corect what we are doing i thought that was the whole point in jumping the connector is so the ecu wouldnt try and jump in and mess with what your doing?????

Can we adjust the distributor with the car off then trun it on an keep rechecking the timing until its 16 degrees btdc and just reset the ecu afterwards?????
