Default Climate control questions

I broke the temperature selector gear for my 90 civic, and I got a new one from Ebay. I have put it back in, but I think I may have other issue that caused it to break in the firsat place and I was wondering if the 2 cables that hook to the control arm have to be on different places, or is it either or? My climate control will not turn the whole range and the heat is almost non existent. I was wondering if it was this, or if I have an issue at the blend door(s)? Not sure where the 2 cables go, but I figured logically one went to a door and one went to a second door, or a valve?
Does anyone know if they have to be specific on the selector arm, one being higher than the other it may throw a little more, But I may be overthinking the situation......

Any help or images would be helpful and appreciated, I searched online and google but did not find anything for a 1990.
I need to take the dash off soon because it squeaks like a brast and i want to add rubber to stop it, So if I need to remove it to get to a broke blend door id want to do it all at once.

Actual heat starts at a valve in the engine bay.
One cable from the control goes to the valve to allow water to pass through the heater core.

The other cable goes to a door on the ducting under the dash to allow heated air into the mix.
