Default OBD1 scanner

I have got PGM-FI 93 model honda civic with PO8-000 ECU.
I am interested in reading the live sensors data and also DTC (codes). I have seen my electrician many times attaching an adapter cable/connector (3 to 16 pins) and then he attaches the famous scan tool by Launch. This way he can read all the codes and can clear them as well.
Since that scan tool by Launch is too much expensive so I am planning to buy ELM327 bluetooth OBDII scanner.
As I have already got 3 to 16 pin adapter cable so the scanner tool will easily connect (physically).
My question is will this scanner which I am going to purchase (ELM327) will be able to read the car sensors and DTCs just like Launch scan tool or not.

This is the actual picture of car, the electrician is busy in reading and clearing some codes...

No, an OBD2 scanner will not be able to read your OBD1 car.

May be not all of them but this scanner by LAUNCH can read them, I have posted an actual picture of my car for proof.
I think (not sure) that the OBD1 is based on CAN bus protocol and all those scanners (OBDII in actual) which are compatible with CAN bus protocol can read OBDI complaint cars. Though this is my assumption, but no matter whatever it is these high end scanners can actually read DTCs on OBDI complaint cars.
However to be able to connect an OBDII scanner with a honda OBDI connector (as an example) the honda 3 pin to 16 pin (or OBDI to OBDII) cable/connector is mandatory.

Does the Solus actually talk to the Pre-obdII honda's? If thats the case, can the brick talk to the same?

My question still remains there......about ELM327..... as a cheap alternative????
or should I risk buying it and then test it iif it works or not???

I know about those high end scanners like launch and may be "snap on solus" too that they are able to read the OBDI complaint cars like my 93 Honda civic.

It is in Pakistan, the car was completely stripped off everything and was fitted with new OEM parts. The car has been rejuvenated now, I will sooner make another thread to show you how actually things were done and the amount of effort that I put in the process.

I have built an OBD I to OBD II converter for 92 - 95 civics.

Then you can use a standard OBD II ELM scanner.

Thanks dear for replying, you have done a nice work. So far I have bought the following cable which converts the 3 pin connector in to 16 pin connector. Now it is physically connectable to any generic OBD II scan tool.

But the work done by you suggests that data stream needs also be reformatted to be read by the OBD II scanner particularly for ELM 327 (as the LAUNCH scan tool was able to directly read the codes).
Or in other words, If I buy a ELM 327 scanner and connect it with my car DLC connector through this cable it won't read the sensors and DTCs.
Am I right?????

No it won't work, at all.

And likely will fry something, the ecu or the scanner.

But for sure, will not work to read anything.

Is there any other alternative than ELM327 scan tool, as those LAUNCH scan tools are hell expensive and only suitable for high tech workshops.

It is hard to find, but there is SnapOn mt2500 scanner that comes with a set of adapters for 92-95 civic.

Or there is a mastertech Honda pgmfi scanner out there.

no hopes, how much it cost you to build the protocol converter you mentioned earlier. Would u like to share its details.

P.S. also tell me what is the best way to share photos on this forum I am new here and I use tinypic.com to upload pics, is there any other better way to do the same??

Are you sure you can't convince some of your car buddies it would be cool to have this.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/working-snap...-/181136851420

It looks like it has the Asian cartridge. Best double check or look around some more but I think you CAN find it.

I'd like to help you
But my system is not something you just turn the key on, probably never will be, because, as you can see, this whole game is old news...

Thanks dear for your help, though its is almost 10 times the price of ELM327 Bluetooth scanner, but it is worth it.
Can you please share the circuit diagram and the code you burned in there. I will try to make it myself.
Also tell me what particular protocol do these 92~95 civics use (PGM-FI)??

You would probably be better off with:

1. Modifying your ecu to work with hondalogger
http://www.hondata.com/hondalogger.html

2. HondaComm
http://www.doctronic.at/HondaComm_E.htm

Seriously, construction and testing of what I've designed is not simple. I really can't offer you support, and costs for fully manufactured, warrantied, supported equipment running only $100 USD ( HondaComm ) I honestly think you will be better off.

Look through my datalogging project too...

Thank you so much for the much awaited help, you have pointed out some nice scanners.
Here I talked to a guy who was selling ELM 727 and by chance he was a supplier so he knew much about them as well. He confirmed me that this ELM 327 won't work for OBD1 cars. He then told me about the Xhorse MVCI 3 in 1 scanner, its price is around 140 US $ (including shipment and all). The scanner has USB-out cable which can be connected with a PC running on windows-XP. The scanner is bundled with windows-XP application software.

I thank you again for extending your help, so nice of you.

Best Regards

I have posted the source and a technical specification for assembling a device capable of converting the Honda diagnostic port to an OBD II standard port.

If you really want to watch live data buy a labscope. Does WAY more than a "scanner" and helps diag other cars/issues. I have/use/LOVE my snap on vantage pro.
