Default Smoke from turbo, ideas?

As the title says I'm getting smoke smoke from my turbo, hot side.

The car was not started for 8 months, and we just did a rebuild on the b18b1 and after it idling for 5-10 minutes the hot side of the turbo starts to smoke a little from, pretty much around the downpipe gasket area.

Does anyone have any idea of what it could possibly be? I'm thinking it could maybe be a bit of extra oil left in the turbo from over the time it sat, but I'm not sure. I haven't ran it again since the first start up.

Any input would be helpful!

Also, the turbo seems like it's in good condition still, has a VERY minimal amount of shaft play, pretty much the same amount it had when it was new so I think the turbo is still ok.

Thanks!

The turbo itself is smoking? Do you have an exhaust leak? or do you mean smoke from the exhaust?

Also is this the same fuel that has been sitting in the car 8 months ago?

ebay turbo? oil is probably running past the seal and down where the exhaust housing meets the center part (near the bolts). seal might have corroded after 8 months of sitting?

if the turbo has been sitting or you handled it was dirty gloves and hands while doing the rebuild or got oil/grease on anything related to the turbo like the manifold downpipe, etc then smoke coming off the housing is perfectly normal on first startup. If it continues to smoke then you have an issue

Ive seen oil get push pass the Oil sealing ring on the turbine shaft and right into the exhaust due to possible over-pressurized oil from the feed line, oil return line configuration, or clocking the CHRA past a certain level.
Thought that would help ya.

But its not always that simple. And letting people know the proper information as you suggest helps everyone whether they are a "noob" "newbie" "noobie" "spoonfed baby" or not. Your way of stating it gives the impression that that "seals" are a couple of rubber grommets that just fail out of the blue when there are other conditions that can be involved. That helps the OP learn even faster, so that when he repeats it, its in a way that everyone can understand. These terms aren't just technical, they have to be somewhat precise, or no one will understand him when he has a legitimate issue.

I'm trying to sound or look "smarter" than anyone. I simply believe that educating others starts with using the correct terminology, so they have a better frame of reference when diagnosing a problem.

Nothing more, nothing less.

^^This.

The same thing applies to building an engine. Its annoying hearing someone explain how they forgot "those half circle things on the crank shaft" when they could have said thrust washer. Learning terminology not only makes you sound smarter, it helps others diagnose and fix problems easier.
