I'm R/R a customer's F22B1 engine in his 97 accord EX vtec, for another F22B1 engine. I ran into an issue with the crank position sensor. the 97 engine has one and the 96 engine that's going in does not. I have the distributor for this engine that has the CPS built in, and my question is, can I wire up the distributor and use the CPS out of it, instead of having to swap oil pumps and all that mess??

I have the OBD1 distributor with internal coil, So can I wire that up to the CPS plug on the cars wire harness??

 

All cars from 96+ should be obd2 and should therefore have the crank and cylinder sensors at the crank. You will need to swap the two sensors from your existing 97 engine over to the 96 engine(i believe this is actually a 95 engine not a 96 engine since you say it's different from yours). You will also need to swap over the oil pump housing AND the crank timing pulley.

You will obviously also be using the existing distributor not the one that came with the 95-96 engine. It might be best to swap over the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold as well, but you will see if they are the exact match or not.

 

Yeah I swapped over the IM already, Exhaust manifold is the same. So I take it there is no way to wire up the 94 OBD1 distributor to work on the OBD2. That way I wont have to swap oil pumps ect??

 

You will have to find out if the signal is the same at the distributor 94/95 vs the 96/97 crank.

They use the same VR signals. You can wire up the OBD1 distributor with the existing CYP wiring from the distributor and the CKP & TDC wires from the oil pump housing. You will have to open up the wire loom and move the 4 wires for the CKP & TDC up to the distributor.

Unfortunately the DIY's for the F series distributor swaps are few and far between. I have never actually done the swap but have worked with enough OBD1 & OBD2 distributor wiring to know how they work and what goes where.

 

Attached an old wire diagram I made up a few years back for the OBD1 distributor to OBD2 wire harness..... Not sure if it helps or not... It really doesn't show the physical connectors or wire looms and such.

Why would you want to do this ? If all you are changing is the engine it would be best to just keep it the same.

With the engine out of the car it's fairly easy to swap it all over compared to having to rewire things and less messy to say the least.

 

ended up installing a brand new oil pump and installing the crank triggers. Car fired right up and perrrrrrrrrs like a kitten.

this engine has a vtec oil pressure switch and the other engine didnt. will this effect anything?
