Tig Welding: Walking the Cup
I just started tig Welding about 3-4 days ago in school.
When people say walk the cup, they don't necessarily mean to roll it from side to side.
What I notice is when I roll it, and walk towards one direction my wrist turns to one side and then I lose rythm, and I Have to re-adjust my hand. The twist in my wrist motion has to be the same in each direction I'm going, correct ?
So with that being said, Walk the cup to one side, holding it there, and then placing the weld down while the other side of the cup walks forward touching the metal ? Sorry if this is hard to explain, I'm having a hard time attempting to perfect this on flat plate.

Think of it as you are walking a barrel. The tungsten shouldnt ever change distance from the base metal. But walking should not change your fill timing, it should simply be as though you are welding 2 paths at the same time; side by side. This can be achieved with a couple different wrist/hand/cup positions and motions. Mix and match the positions/motions of each component until you get the desired result and comfortability. I rarely walk the cup, but there are good uses for it. I found that asking questions only got me so far, I had to weld to figure out what my instructors were talking about. Cost me some money in scrap metal, and tungsten, and gas, and yada, yada, yada, but I ended up getting pretty good where i was once struggling. It was only after just 20 hours of welding; although i did ask questions, the majority of my time was really just welding and trying the different techniques I was told about.
Figured it out. Got some sick ones down, check it out. The Filler just blends into the puddle that you're drawing. Simple as hell now.
