Turn the A/C on high and spray Lysol into the intake in the cowl or take out 2 of the screws for the blower motor and loosen the third so that one side drops down enough you can spray some in the crack. Lysol should kill any mold or mildew. If it doesn't, use stronger fungi/mold killer. *Don't breath when you spray.

Put the on recycle / inside air. The put air fresheners in the glove box.

Also the fresh air / outside air vent is by the battery on a USDM civic. Spary that vent also

xile6 just reminded me, leave it on outside air before shutting off the car. That way the system isn't closed, which helps prevent mold/mildew buildup.

How exactly does the air conditioning system in a car work? In detail please, with pictures to help.

How the air from outside get inside the car, or how does the car cool the air coming into car?

Im definitely going to try the cabin air filter retrofit soon! Another option if retrofitting doesn't float your boat, there is a product called Ona Pro odorblock, you can get it at hydroponics stores. Get a bucket of the gel. Put it in your car overnight a couple times with the lid off. Be forewarned. It is POWERFULLY fresh. More than a day or two and its literally to fresh. Works wonders tho.

intake and exhaust.

The outside air in suck in by the blower motor. then the evap cools the air and blows it at you.
same for inside air. It closes the outside vent and sucks air from the glove box area,cools/heats it then blows it at you.

Thats also why inside air cools faster because its cooling air that is already cool.

I will keep this short and sweet. You can ask more questions about each individual part or research.
How the A/C system works.
Know your components; The Compressor, the condenser, evaporator, and the accumulator.

-When you press the A/C button in your car, you enable a path to energize the COMPRESSOR clutch. In which, turns the piston(s) inside.

-This pumping action causes the oil and refrigerant in the system to circulate from a high pressure side to a low pressure side.

-From the COMPRESSOR, under HIGH pressure, the REFRIGERANT(a substance that turns from liquid gas mixed with an oil that lubricants moving component) goes to the CONDENSER to cool down and condense.

-From the CONDENSER, cooled and under HIGH pressure, now goes into the EVAPORATOR in which the refrigerant goes from HIGH to the LOW pressure side. This transistion cause the refrigerant to cool down even further and turn into a gas (or stays a liquid in some systems). *This happens inside the EVAPORATOR*

-From the EVAPORATOR, cool and LOW pressure refrigerant then goes to the ACCUMULATOR (receiver/dryer) In which this canister receives refrigerant that is then pulled through a fluid that absorbs any moisture in the refrigerant. It is also pulled through a filter that would filter out any debris in the oil.

-From the ACCUMULATOR, LOW pressure refrigerant is then pulled back into the COMPRESSOR due to the low pressure created by the pumping action of the COMPRESSOR.

How the air is cooled and pulled into the car.
Know your components: Blower motor, Climate control panel, heater core, evaporator, vent

-When you hit the switch to turn on the fan on your climate control panel, you enable voltage to power the Blower Motor.

-The blower motor then outside air through vent in the firewall, or elsewhere.

-Within the blower harbour the heater core and evaporator. They look like small radiators. Depending on the settings you have selected, the air coming within the car can be either warmed or cooled. Here are your options;

-With the heat selected: The water valve allows warm coolant in the heater core. In which the air being pulled through the heater core will be warmed. Note: This is also is used to cool coolant/engine temperatures.

- With the A/C on: The A/C system will create the cooling of refrigerant within the evaporator. In which the heat in the air being pulled through the evaporator will soaks into refrigerant by way of heat transfer. Note: Moisture also condensates on the evaporator. This is how you get water dripping from the car, and/or you freeze the evaporator over.

-From the blower motor, your cooled, heated, or neither then comes the air through your vents.

low tech approach, take a bag of charcoal, cut the bag open, leave it in the car for a couple of days with the windows up, dont use the matchlight stuff, only regular dry charcoal, it will absorb every nasty odor in the car
