The engine has to be the same year as the car or newer. ex. you have a 96 dx, if you put anything 96 and newer your cool... if you put anything 95 and older your not cool... Just remember if you do a swap make sure you go to the ref and have it smogged, and to make sure you have all the emissions hooked up.

That engine yr law only applies to OBDII vehicles(96-00) OBDI you can stick what ever yr motor you want as long as you connect all smog equipment that your car originally came with.

Most of it is true, except the OBD I and OBD II part. Even if its OBD I you have to do the year stuff

not true. JDM motors can now be bar certified in CA, as long as the motor is the same year or newer than the car, also it must have all the USDM smog equipment and the correct ECU. there are a couple of people here that have JDM motors bar certified.

from what i read lets say that you have a 95 gsr and you blow you engine its ok to replace it with a JDM engine. but if you have a 95 hatch and want to put in a b18c1 you have to put in a USDM engine. i talked to the ref here near me and he told me that but then he said he dosent care ether way as long as it passes the test and the engine isnt stolen.

It cost me $38.00 to have my hybrid approved. Not very much when you think about all the hassles you will eventually avoid.

it will not pass no matter what. JDM motors have way different emissions standards that usdm motors. it might pass the visual, but it wont pass the smog test.

-the ONLY way you can have a JDM motor passed by a ref is if it is the same year or newer but also same type...
-ie. 94 integra DOHC can have a 94+ JDM DOHC VTEC (and of course with all the US emission parts), a 92 HB cannot have a JDM DOHC VTEC because they come SOHC..
-I called the board people last week and this is what i was told

After having my car reffed and CARB'd in NorCal, I asked about JDM engines. Here is what the ref told me:

"JDM engines are not legal in the state of California."

Having said that, some ref's don't care where the engine originates from, just as long as the smog equipment is there.

A 92-95 HB can have a JDM/USDM DOHC VTEC but you will run into "issues" with the JDM flavor engine.

Not to argue with your post Dut619, but I don't see how CARB ref's are give such misinformation.

i think it depends on the ref, if he/she is an ***, then they wont pass youur JDM motor. IMO

-I understand what you are saying because back in the days when I had a crx with a b16 I called and they told me different...
-I would say **** it, put the JDM motor in with all the smog **** (egr) and take it to the ref... hopefully they are cool and will pass the car...

Riddle me this.....

You have a SOHC car, swap in a USDM DOHC VTEC motor, get it ref'd and certified, then you blow that motor. Can you then get a JDM DOHC VTEC motor to replace the certified USDM DOHC motor?

Just wondering....I called my local courthouse here and asked what I needed to do to get my swap "legitimized" in their eyes and they told me that they simply don't care what you have under your hood!! Amazing. Of course here in this bass-ackwards place we don't even have emissions testing

I would say that if your car was refed with a usdm motor and you swap a jdm motor in with the same displacement the smog tech will most likely not know the difference (my swap almost got overlooked, damn). I say go for it.
