98 Civic EX Engine Noise 1k-2.5k rpm (Video)
I started getting this noise in the engine bay, it seems to be linked directly to the engine, it will make the noise with clutch disengaged and in neutral.
It sounds kind of like if you spin a 10 speed bike's pedals backwards, it has a chain/clicking sound.
It happens between 1000-2500 rpm, while shifting (as the engine is slowing down, between about 2500-1000 rpm) and while engine is under load such as when you might need to upshift because you're going too slow (still only does it between 1k-2.5k rpm).
Here's the video (you can hear it a bit around 14 through 15 seconds)
I don't think it's a heatshield.. I hope it's not a bearing
Just got this thing 3 weeks ago.. it already burns a quart of oil every 600 miles =(
It doesn't sound all that loud because the engine was cold but once the engine warms up and quiets down and the engine is under load at all between 1000-2500 rpm while driving, it gets louder.

Here's one for ya
I believe the sound is coming from the back of the engine compartment area... I stalled it maybe a half dozen times while learning to drive it... and sometimes ride the clutch a little while i have to stop and start on a hill.. but haven't beaten the car up at all.. if i remember correctly, the noise is quieter when its cold out, started noticing it recently at 50*F+ temps
If this thing has more problems i'm going to feel so ripped off.. body is in great shape but seems the person before drove it like an idiot, shouldn't burn a quart of oil every 600 miles at 170k miles...bushings are worn... $2k for a shell =(

That sounds like a lawnmower. Rev it a bit and let us here. Pull your spark plugs, it sounds like either your timing is way off, or your plugs are in dire need of replacement. Take the spark plugs out and let us see what they look like.
After that, check the engine itself for a sign of physical engine oil leaking. Is your exhaust smoke clear, or bluish? If its blue, the oil is being burnt in the engine, needs new rings.
If its leaking from the engine, that'd have to be fixed and still gotta look for the source of the loudness.
It COULD be a spun rod bearing, which means the oil pump is shot and it needs a thin piece of metal if the crankshaft wasnt chewed up.
Doesn't necessarly sound like a spun bearing, but usually thats what we call worst case scenario. if it makes you feel better, 2k for a civic EX shell is still a good price, hehe. a good used longblock is only around 500$ if it is the case,.

Sorry for late reply.
To answer some of your stuff.. burns oil.. slightly blue smoke when its cold out.. 1 qt per 600 mi.
Prob needs new plugs though place I bought it from claims they were replaced 10k mi ago.
Doesn't leak oil at all.
The inside of the valve cover has a lot of burnt oil... like coating all metal.. my old 99 civic with 350k mi (this one has 180k) is clean as a whistle under the valve cover.. rings? Valve seals?
Also seem to have located approximately where the jingling/chain sound is coming from after holding phone mic around different areas of engine seems to be coming from alternator. Also makes the sound when engine is about to stall.

its the oil pump. don't worry about it as long as you have good pressure. my y7 has been making the noise for the last 20k miles lol. it's that whirring noise you hear. mine has 320k on it and still doesn't smoke at all
ohhhh, yeah i was wondering what that whirling noise was, i thought it was the clutch, i guess i need to get this thing into a shop

this video helped me out i havent been on honda tech in a long time but i got a eg hatch with a gsr swap in it and it does the same noise at 1500 rpm or so but never lost any power or nothing and ive changed the alternator water pump timing belt tensioner and nothing really someone had sugested the oil pump but i was never sure cause i bought it brand new from inline four its a type r oil pump so looks like ima be replacing that
Oil pumps are NOT suppose to make sounds like this.
It is hard to tell from the video, but it does sound similar to a bad pump.
It is NOT something you want to risk. If it is on its last leg, and it randomly fails. You will lose your engine. Does your oil pressure light come on at all when you stop suddenly, or speed up? What is the condition of your oil?
Never have oil light come on cept when I stall or about to stall it...
Makes jingling noise when about to stall
Today started making whining noise

My d16y8 made a whining noise at idle sometimes, it didn't always do it. My engine is apart now and I spun the water pump(part connected to the timing belt) that was the fkn whine cause it made a weird noise when I spun it. You can't spin an oil pump off the motor, cause its connected to the crank. I thought my oil pump was fkd, but it seems to be fine. So I just bought the Gates water pump for my rebuild. Hope that helps bro
