1990 4door ex rev limited to 4k
I have a 1990 4 door ex that wont go past 4000 revs. When I get on the freeway or simply drive fast the car hits 4k and wont go faster till it shifts. Example: I am on 1st gear and started accelerating, It gets to 4k and keeps banging into the rev limiter until I let go of the gas so it can shift. Same for 2nd and 3rd gear.
I did the paper clip method to get a code.......It gave me four blinks on the Check engine light. Im not sure what this is. I think it is some kind of sensor. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated thank you.

It has to be a code 4, which is what you said it was, the Crank Position Sensor. In all the lists I have found, I have never seen a code 40.
It's a black rectangle or square shaped box. You could probably get by just pulling another sensor itself from the junkyard rather than replacing the whole distributor. Note the exact position of the sensor in the distributor. It's very important.
