Default H22A1 loss of power/running rough

Hello H-T, i got a 92 eg hatch with a H22A1 swap running a stock p28 ecu. while i was driving normal, i started to feel a sudden loss of power and i was barely able to get it to my grandmas house. i pulled the CEL codes and i got 41 , primary O2 sensor (there is no O2 sensor) and 21 vtec solenoid. ive been running it since i bought it without a O2 sensor and it was running fine. car will still start but runs extremly rough with a really bad idle (nothing like a vacuum leak, FITV or IACV). it has a very rough time reving also and sputters just to get to 3000 RPM. can you guys help me out on diagnosing my problem?

could be your Idle control getting clogged up.

the iacv getting clogged is only gonna effect it if its sitting at idle. it has no power while reving. but i will still try cleaning it.

So listen to me, you NEED a O2 sensor in a daily driver car. A car "can" run without one, but you damaging your engine for no reason. You making your car confused on how much fuel it needs to give at any given time. The only reason to ever not run a O2, is if its a track only car. I mean doesnt even own a set of licence plates, these cars also have been tuned with a different mapping. Your stock ecu doesnt have the capability to run no O2 properly. Once you put one on i bet your problems will go away.

You have a h22a1 with a stock p28 you said? The ecu needs chipped with a base
Map for a h22 atleast.

Changed Tps, Map sensors still same problem. All spark plugs were black so I replaced them and the new plugs are already black. Also black smoke comes out the exhaust. Almost sounds like its misfiring

If it happened all of the sudden, I would lean towards timing belt, maybe it got a bit loose and one of the cams skipped a tooth or two. It can happen and still run, but barely.

Pull the valve cover and line the crank up to TDC, and see how everything looks in the timing belt side.

I had my Vtec pressure switch get clogged on my GSR. It threw the code and WOULD NOT RUN worth crap. So I took the pressure switch off and cleaned out the little hole, reset the ECU and no problem since

Pulled the valve cover and checked the timing and everything linedup perfect. I tried cleaning out the egr valve and still the same problem. Fuel pump is working and the filter isn't clogged

run a leakdown on the engine. You ran the wrong ecu for that engine for an extended period of time, its possible you burned a valve or two.

the ecu is what controls the injectors, ignition timing...etc. Why would run a ecu programmed for a single cam with 600cc less of displacement as well as less compression?

All that's probably happening is your car is running in limp mode with it throwing the vtec pressure switch code. You need to use a p13 ecu or a chipped p28 with an h22a1 basemap at the very least. You also need to use an oxygen sensor. Not quite sure why you think that running an oxygen sensor is no big deal.

K it's a been a while, I decided to swap my motor with a semi built h22a4 that I had laying on the side. Got it fired up and had the exact same problem in this motor as I did in the last one. Timing and bent valves is out of the question. What else could cause this? Now when I open up the throttle it completely does out.

just like every one else has said if your running a P28 your going to need to get it chipped or you could just get a P13 and it will run perfect, btw i have a tuned P13 laying around that i dont use. if interested pm me

Ecu isn't the problem. I've ran 3 different Ecus and all 3 have been tested on another car. A chipped p28 w/ custom h22 basemap and a stock p72. Every ecu had the exact same symtoms. It seems like its running super rich. All plugs keep turning black and bluish smoke comes out the exhaust. Also put in a brand new dizzy.

Well the blue smoke with carboned up plugs is prolly oil getting in there somehow but you said its happened with 2 different engines. sounds like some sort of timing issue to me. I know u said u tried different ecus but something electronic is wrong. maybe a crank sensor or something

So 2 different engines and 3 different ecus, and the exact same issue all the time?

That leaves either wiring or sensors. If you have a bunch of stuff lying around, wouldn't hurt to swap some sensors, or at least check them to make sure they are good as per the Helms.

But it is probably a wiring issue, so after checking all of your grounds a million times, start checking continuity on wires from the sensors to the ecu plugs, and maybe double check that you are getting the appropriate signals from the sensors on that end as well.

Alright I'll start testing the sensors and wires. Could a bad fuel pressure regulator be causing this also? It seems like its just dumping fuel into the injectors. And when I floor it, it dies, so possibly flooding it? The only thing I reused was the fuel system.

I don't care how many ecu's you tried. Did one of them have
a h22 base map? If not. Stop messing around and get a tuned
Ecu for a h22.
And make sure you have OEM injectors and
38-44 psi of fuel. Take the injectors out and use a 9v battery
and make sure they are clicking strong and are not stuck open.

Check for full complete spark on all 4 wires, black spark
Plugs is UN burnt fuel right? You could have bad spark plug
wires or a loose wire in the distributor or bad icm or something.

Try those and make sure you have that o2 hooked up and no CEL
lights
