Oil dipstick didn't register any oil when I last changed it...
In September, I decided to switch to synthetic on my '98 w/82,000. Anyways, I decided to check the level before I change it, but when I pulled the dipstick out there was only some oil up the side of the stick, from the sides of the dipstick tube. I wish I'dve measured how much I drained, 'cause I don't know HOW dry I really was. Also, when I first got the car it burned a quart in 800 miles, and Honda didn't do anything about it. I'm a big fan of Vtec though, so maybe that's it. I also get drips of oil (It looks as if) out of my tailpipes after I clean them. From what I understand a lot of H22a's burn oil like this, right? I'm not sure how much oil I really had. The engine seems fine though, I hope I didn't hurt anything. peace
i'd go back to dino oil.
h22a's burning oil is common. especially in the 5th gen.'s with some of the weaker rings.
synthetic will only make the problem worse.
you really have to keep an eye on your oil consumption. check oil every couple of days if you drive the car daily.

there is actually an updated piston ring from honda. if i were you, i'd called the local honda dealership and ask them about them, don't let them BS you, i've got a friend that is a service advisor for honda/acura, and he's the one that told me about it.
Sweet, was the ring developed to address this problem specifically, or is it just updated? I know it's not a recall, but does anyone know anything else about it? I'd rather hear it from someone other than the dealer, ya know. Thanks
the problem with the rings have been known some time among prelude owners. there have been no recalls because it would cost honda a bundle. that's why their tolerance of 1 quart per 1000 miles i believe is ridiculous.
using synthetic will only make the problem worse. meaning, you need to check your levels regularly.
replacing rings can be expensive depending on if the cylinder walls are scored or damaged. labor alone will cost in the area of $1000+.
