Default Gen 1 CRV not starting

Picked up a 99 CRV 5 speed as a project, was told it had a bad starter. Pulled the starter, had it tested 3 times in a row at the same place. Passed every time. Put a brand new battery in. Two days ago, it turned over a couple times slowly, noticed a burning smell from the starter. Today, tried it again after dropping a spoonful of ATF down each plug tube, now it is just one click, but a hard click. Can see the motor move with the click, but does not even turn over. Any advice? Hate throwing parts at problems. Thanks

a starter can turn with no load, but as soon as a load is applied (the motor, or a 2x4 jammed into it) it wont have the torque to turn it. Put the starter in a vise, jump it with a battery or booster pack, and jam a 2x4 in it. if it still turns, then you know its good.

You could always check junkyards for old V's and maybe get one that way. would be a lot cheaper than $150 prolly less than $50
