I have a 99 dx auto trans (it actually a Value Package, I think there the same) But it has a D16Y7 motor. The transmission is on its way out. My car has 1765xx miles on it. I found an 97 EX trans at a local salvage yard for $125 with 150000 on it. Will this be a direct swap or will i need something else, like a wiring harness or diffrent computer? Also what are the down sides or positives of having an ex over a dx trans. I plan on keeping the car stock. (no vtec swaps)

 

won't work. the ecu will throw a code for third gear. can't run an ex ecu either.

 

Yep, I have personal experience with this. It needs to be a Y7 trans and nothing else.

 

Just out of curiosity can either of you explain why it throws a code for third gear?

 

I was wondering about this also. I'm not refuting the fact that it will throw a cel, I'm just curious as to why it does so.

 

Different 3rd gear ratio between the two transmissions. The ECU doesn't see what it expects to see and throws a code. To the ECU it looks like slippage.

what about a manual lx-> ex tranny swap? Ive got the dx/lx d16y7-> ex d16y8 swap nailed down and want to see about putting in an ex manual tranny for my lx manual tranny.
