Icon2 98 civic CEL on...

Hello all,

I had a check engine light on but pep boys said there was no communication between the scanner and the ECU. So.... I pulled the codes the old fashioned way by jumping the blue plug near the ECU.

Here are the codes I got:

03
54
70
71
72
73
74
76

Can anyone help me figure out what these codes mean??

ok here https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/%5Bfaq%5D-ecu-codes-everyone-682412/ but i thought all obd2 codes started with P1 and obd1 was just a number like you posted(im obd1)

I'm not pulling the codes with a scanner because the scanner could not connect to the ECU (according to pepboys)...

What I'm doing is jumping the ECU connecter and counting the blinks on the CEL.

I watched this video and it stated that OBDII codes could be read this way.

However now that I got the digits IDK how to distinguish which code it exactly is.

the obd2 civics use the P codes when hooked up to a scan tool, but you can still pull them the old fashioned way and it gives a number like the obd1 way....like video above

ok i've never had to pull them that way on my 99 civic that's why it seemed strange. maybe someone can specify if you pull them via jumper then you look at last 2 didgets and ingore the p1x as that's what shows with a scanner

ok can you specify which codes these digits will be because when I look at the list posted there are a few of the last digits that repeat...

For example

P0003
p0103
p0303

how can I figure which one my car is showing?

ok cool while looking at the OBDI list you posted, it doesn't make sense because I don't have an automatic transmission, (its MT 5 speed), also I for sure don't have misfires in all four of my cylinders because the car runs well except for low idle when the car is warmed up. Oh and the code 76 that I listed in my first post is not found in that list.

3 MAP - manifold absolute pressure sensor
54 CKF - crank fluctuation sensor
70 Automatic transmission problem
71 random misfire cylinder 1
72 random misfire cylinder 2
73 random misfire cylinder 3
74 random misfire cylinder 4

unhook the battery, or pull the 7.5 amp backup fuse in the fuse box in engine compartment for 3 mins

the obd2 will detect a fart in the drivers seat as a misfire, something as simple as a distributor rotor can get picked up, look for something that affects all four cylinders, how long since a basic tune up? a simple plug/plug wires/ distributor cap/ rotor will often fix that, what type of plugs are you running? when I got my 98 I had misfire code issues, someone had installed some of those multi electrode radioactive spark plugs, or whatever they were, replacing them with basic NGK V power plugs solved the issue

the basic tune up has been less than 1 year. I have NGK spark plugs in the car.

ok, was just throwing that out there, the OBD2 is more sensitive to tune up issues then the old system

I reset the ECU... The light went off I drove the car about 20 miles home and still no CEL on. I hope the codes were just mistakes on the ecu and not real issues... BTW my "matienence required" light is still green... When I've had misfires in the past it would turn to red or yellow..

The maintenance required light has no bearing on anything except predetermined mileage intervals, you can reset it anytime with a key or screwdriver. If it changed colors at the same time it was pure coincidence. How does the car run?

The car runs well but has a rough idle when it warms up. The CEL came back on this morning as I was driving to work. I will be attempting to "jump" the ECU for the codes and see if I get the same codes as yesterday. I think it might be my MAP sensor because the idle is rough. and in the the morning its high. idk? just a thought.
