Default What distributor do I need: D16Z6

My 2000 Honda Si needs a new motor. I found a D16Z6 motor for sale but it has had the distributor removed. Can someone enlighten me as to what distributor it needs? Part number or equivalent North American Honda motor would be perfect.

Thanks, Eric

Why do you not just get the B16 that's supposed to drop in there?

It takes a D16Z6/D15Z1 distributor. Also the D16Z6 is a North American engine, found in the '92 - '95 Civic EX/Si. You will need to either buy an adapter harness for the plugs or swap the CYP/CKP/TDC sensor, or cut and splice the plug(s)

Thanks. The seller says the motor comes with a "OBD2 to OBD1 adaptor" Is this the harness to which you refer?

The distributor you are looking for is a TU-42U.

As 94EG8 posted you will need to adapt the wiring harness, along with the other work to put an OBD1 motor in an OBD2 car.

You mean TD-42U? I don't see a TU-42U

It probably refers to the ECU adapter harness. So I'll say unlikely but possible. Also, there are a couple of different OBD2 to OBD1 adapater harness in either case. one for OBD2A and one for OBD2B.

It's stamped on one leg of the distributor, if it's an aftermarket distributor it may not have the mark.

You're also going to have issues with a few things unless you plan on also converting the ECU to OBD1 namely all the OBD2 emissions item the D16Z6 does not have. What ECU do you plan on using? The alternator won't plug and play as well, neither will the injectors, although you could swap over the B16A injectors or "adapt" the OBD2 connectors to fit the Z6 injectors.

^ Yep, there's a whole host of issues really, most of which can be worked around. Be aware if you live in a state wuth strict emissions testing (like california) that engine will not pass period since it's older than the vehicle it's going into.

OP, what exactly are you dealing with here? Simple blown engine? Theft recovery missing the entire powertrain? Assuming you're in the US and that was a stock Si, that D16Z6 wont bolt up to the transmission you have now (assuming you have a transmission)

I am in Canada. The car is a 1999, not a 2000 as I originally said. The motor burns a whack of oil, also uses coolant. Could be head gasket causing the coolant burn, but don't want to do the gasket and then still have an engine that needs rings. I figured it would be easier to just swap it out.

The D16Z6 motor comes with tranny, axles, ECU, and OBD 2 to OBD 1 Harness. Apparently it was swapped into a 2000 car before. I am starting to think this may not be the way to go.

Our car came with a D16Y8, but I can't find A D16Y8 motor right now.

I did get a line on a ZC/D16A SOHC VTEC Engine. The seller says it fits a 1996 - 2000 Civic. Is this a better fit for my car? Ideally I need a direct swap, with minimal hassles.

Yes I meant TD-42U, sorry about that.

That changes things a bit. The transmission you have will bolt up.

Same car. '96 - '98 is the same and '99 - '00 is the same.

Yeah, it's probably not worth doing anything with the current engine.

If it has the engine harness they used before it would be especially attractive.

It's usually easier to find a good D16Y7 or JDM OBD2 non-vtec ZC and swap the Y8 head on.

I haven't seen an OBD2 version of that engine, but if that's what it is it would be a little easier.
