Last weekend I decided to go for a Throttle body cleaning. I just did it with the whole intake installed and poured a lot of it with the car off and then on. I also disconnected almost all hoses that were attached to it and pour cleaner into these as well. I DID NOT POUR INTO THE COOLANT ONES.

However I disconected a couple of coolant ones without knowing and it spilled quite a lot coolant. I reatachend, removed the radiator cap, heater on hot and start pouring coolant until the fan kicked in.

So simply with that done, my car now its idling nearly at 1000 rpm (before was at like 600) and when the car is moving it idles like at 1300rpm, comes to a FULL stop and back to 600. Never experienced something like that with previous cars. The strange thing is my Milleage has gotten waaayy better whith that cleaning. I got 36mpg on city (not too busy here though.) I was getting 26 before. Maybe I am calculating bad, I just refuel a bit just when the low gas light is shown for the very first time and then make the division between distance and liters added.

Last but not least, its a 98 Civic EX with the D16y8 stock engine on it. Nothing aftermarket other than a k&n drop in air filter and iridium spark plugs.

 

Bleed the air that you introduced into the cooling system from the spillage.

 

While you had the intake manny off did you clean/adjust the FITV? Did you clean the IACV? Maybe you didn't have the manifold off and i just misunderstood you.. You should clean both and adjust the FITV while it's out.

To adjust the FITV just take a flat head screw driver and turn the white plastic (only white after it's clean) and turn it clock wise until it stops. My eg was 2 1/2 turns out and my CD5 was 3 turns out. Made a HUGE difference.

What do you mean by bleed the air? Didn't I accomplished that by adding watter and waiting for bubbles? Maybe I should have waited longer?

I think my car does not have a FITV. And I did not clean my IACV, I didnt know how to do it at that moment so I jjust throw in a LOT of carb cleaner into the throttle body and all attached hoses (not the coolant ones).

Is it possible to remove the IACV without removing the whole intake? It seems doable, unless both screews are too long.

 

if you have already driven the car since, chances are the system is bled, but make sure your coolant level is okay as it may have taken in more fluid. BTW there may also be a bleeder at the upper hose, you could loosen that and see if coolant comes out, in case there are some pockets left.

 

I don't know if the screws are to long. Doubt it. You might have to leave them in the IACV and just pull it out with the bolts still inside it. Your car has no FITV? Haven't looked under the hood of your gen civic.

I think I read somewhere that it didnt have any. Ill check to clean the IACV properly and if that doesnt help I will see how to bleed the coolant correctly.

Just throwing this out there because there are about a million things that can cause a surging idle.

Make sure your throttle body butterfly valve closes all the way.
After a month of chasing my problem, i finally found my TB was still open just a hair.
Adjusted the tb stop and the idle stabilized, then it got even better when i adjusted the idle screw.

I hope it is just matter of cleaning them, it has worked for me before
