steering rack rebuild, or replace?
So my 89 hatch has about a quarter million miles on it now and the steering rack is shot I was wondering if it would be better to get an all new one or to rebuild it with new bushings and a quaife quick steering r&p kit?
It's up to you and depends on how much you want to spend and what the purpose of the car is. Mine has 376 000km on it and the steering rack was loose, I went to carquest and bought a brand new one (not rebuilt - no core) for 229$ CAN tx-in, car feels brand new and tight! Money well spent.
you can rebuild the manual rack for $10 in parts.
its just the rack end bushing and an adjustment at the pinion.
the extra labor is negligible compared to taking out the rack and replacing it anyway.
