So about 2 weeks ago I had a hose leading from my idle control valve spring a leak. While my friend was replacing the hose. He noticed that that there was a solid piece of cardboard blocking both holes. My car actually idles much better now that the cardboard has been removed. So I have 2 questions.

Is there any good reason why someone would block off a working IACV?

Prior to replacing that hose, I had other hoses spring leaks on me as well. My friend suggested that the cardboard caused a pressure build up resulting in me replacing a hose almost every month. Could anyone confirm or deny this?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

 

You can confirm this yourself. See if any hoses fail now that the problem is fixed.

 

Not likely that a block off plate would burst lines. The block off is only preventing air form moving through the valve to the intake. The coolant section is isolated from that part of the valve.

Consider that these are small hoses and 20 years old.

As far as why they blocked it off, the valve may be causing issues that just don't show up right now. These valves can behave differently depending on outside temperatures.

 

I just find it very weird that they would block it off. My car would turn off after idling for 3 minutes on a cold start unless I drove it a bit.

So I should just give it more time to see if it acts up?

I was also considering that they are just showing their age even though I have no clue how old they are. Thanks belairbrian

 

I wouldn't block of the IACV maybe the FITV but that's it. If the IACV is acting up take it off, make sure its clean and replace the o-rings on it (Honda dealer only item). I did that and cleaned the FITV on both my eg and cd5. They run better but my cd5, that's a whole story in itself.
