Do I need this - Whats it for?
I pulled the front cross member off and found this shim thing between it and the frame. Like the title says: Do I need this - Whats it for? The ones under the battery are beyond saving.

Good question, I've wondered the same but never bothered looking. However I did put a crossmember back on without those and didn't have any problems.

Does it have anything to do with alignment? But not just the usual caster, camber and (obviously not) toe? I'm talking about things like bump-steer and such.
