My car shut off after I slammed on the brakes
Hello everyone, I was driving on the freeway today and slammed on my brakes because traffic stopped out of nowhere. I noticed that my car had turned off and that it was still moving at about 20 mph and I had to turn it back on. Is this normal? I drive a 1995 Civic VX hatchback.
Auto, or manual? I wouldn't call it normal, but I could see a sudden deceleration causing a stall, if it's a manual. Probably not what happened, but for lack of a better alternative
My car has a manual transmission. I wouldn't call it normal either but, I just wanted to know if this is what is supposed to happen in a situation like the one that I described.
No, it's not supposed to happen. To be honest, as long as the CEL isn't on after your fiasco, I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably a one-off event. I tried replicating it a few times in the parking lot before I went to get some cigarettes, as well as on an empty dead-end road, and couldn't.
yea hopefully it's a one off I had one of those events the other day where my car wouldn't start then started up a few minutes later like nothing happened... didn't do anything out of the normal before I shut the car off and tried to recreate the day and hasn't happened since so it could.be a fluke thing.. ps if anybody has an idea what might of happened to me I would love inputs

check all of your plug wires and coil pack wire! i had a loose wire once going from my coil pack to my cap on my distributor and every time i did hard sudden movements the car would die because it wasnt getting spark to the plugs!! could be the problem
My car randomly shut off while pulling into work yesterday. Im thinking it was a fluke also because it was all rainy/snowy and doesnt like to run well in that weather

IF YOU HAVE POWER BRAKES YOU MIGHT HAVE DRAWN TOO MUCH VACUUM AND KILLED THE ENGINE. EVERY TIME I STOMP ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE STATIONARY MY REVS DROP A COUPLE HUNDRED. MAYBE YOU STOMPED SO HARD THAT YOU DROPPED LIKE 8 OR 9 HUNDRED REVS AND THE CAR DIED? BUT A FORCE LIKE THAT WOULD REQUIRE YOU STOMPING THROUGH THE FLOORPAN, SO I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THIS.

The revs do drop slightly if I apply the brakes while I am stationary but, I don't think it would be enough to cause the car to turn off. I am guessing that I stalled by accident due to being preoccupied. When I tried to replicate the incident, my car didn't turn off because I stepped on the gas right after.
