I just bought my 97 civic just recently as well, when I bought it it came with just manual windows and locks, so first thing I did with it is convert them all to power windows, d/l, and mirrors, then installed an aftermarket keyless entry and remote start, next I will be repairing any body damage, eg. the rust on the quarter panels, then giving her a nice paint job.

dont rice it out with stupid autozone or ebay crap. if its all original. keep it that way it will be worth much more.

i would leave that sohc alone unless you boost it.
its a casino engine. you dump money in it without much return.
a great upgrade would be a b16 engine or any other bigger b series engines. while keeping the car stock looking would make a great sleeper.

What about bolt ons.? intake, header, exhaust?
yea, I plan on putting a b16 series engine from a 99 civic, I don't think it will need much modification as its the same car, then putting the ball bearing turbo kit in it from treadstone performance
smaller engine doesnt respond to boltons as much as bigger displacement.
just look at supercharged 1.6 liter and supercharged 2.0 liter engine
it doesnt go by number it goes by percentage. smaller you start with smaller gains you see.
im sure there are people that argue and can build a badass single cam just to proove a point. but if you just want to enjoy your car. keep it simple and get a bigger displacement motor.
d series was not built for power it was built for economy. gsr and type-r engines were built for performance more than economy. even b16 is more of an economy engine than power( some may argue) b16 does have a nice power output for being a 1.6 liter.
DOHC engines also have more aftermarket parts and are more flexible in tuning because of separate camshaft for intake and exhaust.
