Default 2001 Honda EX Junkyard D17 Swap

I have a 2001 Honda Civic EX which had the D17A2 Engine with a rod knock. So me and a buddy grabbed a Engine from the local junkyard. It happened to be the D17A1 Block from a LX. After reading a bunch of the forums it appeared that as long as we kept the Head from my EX (VTec) and since my ECU is a EX (VTec) it would work. So we got a D17A1 Block with my D17A2 Head back in the car, everything is hooked back up. Were getting the engine to crank but not start. We checked fuel lines and fuel is pumping to it. When we try to start it after theres a bunch of clicking on the passenger side which i assume is probably the computer. We tried pulling the ECU fuse to reset the computer along with most fuses under the hood. Before the swap the car started fine just had a terrible knock. Any ideas?

I don't think you would be able to hear anything from the ECM/PCM, it's probably a relay that you hear clicking. Did you dis-connect the battery before you started unplugging stuff. That's a good way to kill the electronics in the vehicle. Can you get any codes from it? Did the LX block have the same EGR passages as the EX block?

I did a compression test which tested to 180 psi so i think thats pretty good

i got a Spark tester and tested the coils and got no spark which i mean we all kinda assumed that here that it was a spark issue but i tried some different coils still no spark

Grounds look good

Yes we did disconnect the battery before working on the car.

As for the EGR passages i dont know the D17A1 well enough to say.

Thanks

did you have any issues when you put the D17a1 back in your civic? or did it just plug and play for you?

i k-pro'ed my civic so it wasnt just plug and play, but as far as the heads go there the same the only difference is the combustion chamber the a1 has lower compression i think its like 9.1:1 or some where around there the a2 has higher compression like some where 9.8:1 also the vtec is the other difference the bottom end from the a1 to a2 is nothing they are the same block same crank same pistons, all of the a1 is the same it will bolt up the just like the a2, use your stock a2 ecu for control of the vtec, you can also use the a2 ecu on the a1 it will work fine. but you can not use the a1 ecu on the a2 due to the fact theres no vtec wires running from it to the motor

Depending on what year D17a1 you got, 2001, 2002, and 2003 did not have egr, while 2004 and 2005 did.
