Icon2 Ditched the turbo.....Going N/A *semi-built ls/vtec*

My set-up as it sits on my garage on the floor:

Head- stock port stock v.t and cams B16 Pr-3

Block- B18B stock bore. Eagle rods, ACL Race bearings, ARP studs/bolts. Cp 9.0:1 pistons

Cooling- Full size Mishimoto dual core rad. with dual Mishimoto fans

I was running a simple 50trim setup making 365whp/259wtq. I'm in the process of looking for a 12.0:1 or 12.5:1 comp piston. I also need a whole intake setup. I sold my I.M, f.rail, and t.b plus I need an intake since I had an Intercooler setup before.

1. Do you guys think I should go with 12.0 or 12.5 compression? This will be on 93 octane. I will not be daily driving this. I'm finally getting around to throwing my 4pt weld in cage this season and turning it into a track only car. This will not be a trailer queen (I wish lol) My bud has OEM CTR pistons. And I found a whole set of ITR rods for $100 bucks. Cheap but I won't make as much power, AND I already have Eagle rods. Why not just use em...

2. Like I said, I'm going to need a whole intake setup........OR....should I pay a few hundred more and find a good used set of ITB's? There was just a set of 52mm TWM ITB's in marketplace that sold for $650.

~AEM V2 maybe $175 used, Performer X maybe $250 used, decent t.b maybe $150 used, RDX or a good injector $150 used. That's over $700~

Would you guys suggest manifold setup or ITB's? What would make more power and what would be better/funner for the track? (road racing)

For cams, I might just do CTR cam. If a nice aftermarket set with v.t comes up fs for a good price, I may get it. But the least I'll have will be CTR Intake cam.

Thanks for the help guys. Please, if you do not have anything constructive or helpful to say, please keep it to yourself. I'm not trying to deal with flamers and their b.s comments. Just looking for some honest opinions and/or suggestions.

As far as intake/cam/compression ratio setup it really depends on how much power you are looking to make. I'd do 12.5:1 since it won't be your daily, pro 1 cams with ferrea/skunk2/supertech valvetrain, and you can get a 70mm tb from omni power off of the marketplace here for about $110 shipped to your door step, performer x is a nice intake manifold for your setup but a little pricey. An itr intake manifold would do just fine if you can find one for cheap. rdx injectors are also an excellent choice for injectors. 410 cc's, and great spray pattern compared to rc etc. Also not too expensive compared to nicer injectors like injector dynamics or fuel clinic. With this setup you should be on your way to making some decent power after a dyno tune. Of course not nearly as much as when you were boosted but I think 200+ whp is definitely obtainable.

^^^ thanks for the response.

Power isn't really my main concern. But it would be nice to hit 200whp.

An ITR i.m would get me to 200 ? I never thought the ITR i.m would make that much power. That's interesting..... So you're suggesting I do a manifold setup over ITB? What's your thought on that?

Thanks for the help bro

type-R motor with some part swapping can get you very close to 200whp.
and peace of mind that it was assembled by honda

Personally, I wouldnt go 12=12.5 CR for 93 octane unless the tune is spot on perfect.

11.5 would be my limit.

IMO, ITBs are nice to show off, but the traditional plenums work just fine. Any intake from ebay will work unless your needing a BAR sticker.

I just ditched my turbo setup as well and going B20 non vtec. I know i wont be near 200whp, but im looking for the torque for the streets.

I tend to agree. We did that with similar parts for Project SHE and made exactly 201whp with a similar setup as above listed (except we used the Skunk2 Alpha 70mm TB)

^^^ You guys did 201whp with ITR i.m ?

11.0 seems a little low. Maybe if this were a DD. But for a purpose built track only car I'd like to stay in the 12 comp range. My tuner is pretty good and I trust that he will keep my motor safe with 93oct. Just like I did when I was turbo, I didn't even start the car until it was at his shop. It was trailored there and broken in on the dyno. I will be doing the same when I finish everything.

crazydom and shodan: I'll keep an eye out for those 12.5:1 pistons and good cams. I've heard good things about Blox cams. Any input on these cams? And if you guys say I can reach 200whp with the ITR i.m, then I may just run that. A lot cheaper

quick ?..... How much power can be made with CTR cams? Would they need v.t or will my oem b16 v.t suffice? My pr-3 has less than 600 miles. It is mint. It was completely rebuilt using all oem honda parts when I put it together for turbo

thanks again for the help guys

It wasn't reliable. Small crap kept happening. Turbo bolts backing out. They run hot on the track. I could've kept it and just kept fixing it after every event. It was a street car at the time. This time I'm going all out track car and I want a reliable motor. Before it was about power. This time it's about more seat time and reliability...

You CAN run turbo and road race (ask Shodan) but I'm choosing not to

In my LS/VTEC B18 I went with YCP type R pistons cast aluminum alloy.

I got them off craig's list new from a guy who decided to go H series in the middle of his build. I got them with new NPR rings for $150.

I think they are good for heat dissipation especially because I don't have oil squirters in the B18 B1 bottom end. Oil squirters primary function is cooling so I think the aluminum alloy piston will help.

I have a Type R head and cams with LS crank and rods. I tried calculating my CR but I'm not sure of the piston dome volume to complete the calculation.

I'm guessing around 11.2? Runs good on 93 octane.Just chipped by phearable not tuned yet.
