Icon2 99 civic Auto Transmission Problem

I posted this in the civic thread but found this thread and think its a better fit. sorry guys. I was given a 1999 civic 4 door (I think lx) non vtec tonight with an auto. The guy said the transmission was out of it and was drivable just not in 4th gear. upon driving it home i noticed when it would shift in to 4th it would pull just fine and shift fine up to 4th but when letting the car coast there was a loud whining noise. Its hard to explain. my dad described it like a hydrolic pump running but loader. Ill try to get a video of it tomorrow. as soon as you start to apply the throttle again it would quite down. Only does it in 4th though and under coast. I was planing on putting a used transmission in it but im not sure if it might be something that will be easier to fix than that. the car has 176xxx on it. im hoping this will make me a nice first car.

Is it overfilled? Check it with the car warmed up, but shut off.

THe guy who gave it to me said it wasnt oem dipstick and he thought that when the car was wrecked (both airbags deployed, passenger side front hit) that some how or another it broke the stick or it got lost. Right now we think the dipstick is to short for this car, and that was just thrown on there when the car was rebuilt. im thinking about draining 1/2 quart of trans fluid and driving it to see what happens. I couldnt find a trans dipstick online tonight, im going to try to call around in the morning.

I'm pretty doubtful on the dipstick. They're only about $16 new from Honda IIRC. Also they will normally get very loose in the hole over time and wont seal correctly.

If you can't find a new one I have a 97 parts car, I can measure the dip stick tomorrow and give you a measurement from the top to the full level.
