Default so i threw my shiny intake pipe in the trash

I couldn't get the one I bought to fit right, it was a spectre 8219 which I assume now is a quasi universal piece anyway. but I looked over the stock 98 4cyl pipe and its smooth on the inside and looks to be more heat resistant so I put the nice cone filter I bought on there and its been running great,.

my question is..., why don't more people do this? I mean just run a filter with the stock pipe or is the pipes on other cars pretty crappy. I mean I come from the world of big displacement v8's fords and I understand they can such a lot of air but can a lil 2.3 really demand so much air that the stock pipe isn't sufficient?

please educate me

I kept the cone filter because
a. I wont have to replace it in a year like a paper "fram"
2. it makes cool sucky sucky sounds.
III. it has to flow better than the stock garbage and at 22bux hopefully I will see a 1mpg improvement or more.

The reason that the "aftermarket" filters, even k&n, flow better is because they let more crap through. I have seen what aftermarket filters do to the 7.3 6.0 6.4 turbos on fords and the inside of my intake manifold on my accord. As far as anything intake goes, personally i believe in the stock option. But if your vehicle never sees dirt, and you don't love in a dust bowl of a desert, then your not as bad off.

I had the same spectre intake in my vehicle. It didn't fit right. It says some mods may be necessary for a fit. With mine I bought a 90 degree rubber elbow coupler from menards and attached that to the throttle body, and the intake backwords so the bend was by the battery. It was a perfect short ram intake. For the vacuum tube all I did was put a small hole in the rubber elbow, sealed it with some silicon caulk and ran it to the vacuum lines.
