Default linear solenoid

what is the purpose of the linear solenoid on 96-00 auto civic? also would it be bad to leave it disconnected?

A Google search got me this "The linear solenoid is responsible for shifting gears in the trans."

It's bad to disconnect the linear solenoid. It is a pressure sensor that is used to control the transmission lock-up system.

The transmission won't lock-up properly, so shifting will probably feel jerky.

but mainly the problem comes in car when they become about 2-3 years old i would only say that these solenoids need proper maintainance

Short of physically damaging the linear solenoid through blunt force trauma or something similar what normally happens is the transmission itself is bad and will initially show up as something like a linear solenoid code. It's the not the solenoid that's the problem, it's the transmission itself. How long it lasts is anyone's guess. Why do you want to unplug it? It's not going to work any better than it does plugged in.
