Icon2 Help please!! 94 Civic overheating

My sons car is overheating. Replaced Thermostat twice and radiator. Ive seen many posts saying it can be a head gasket, or fan switch. We already bought the fan switch to replace next. My question is what else can we try? My son is 17 and trying to fix the car with his dad they are not mechanics. My husband is good with cars. Would the head gasket be too big of a job for them? Are there any good websites that you'd recommend for do-it-yourself auto repair? And if a shop were to fix a head gasket about how much money would it cost? Any info is appreciated. I don't believe his oil looks milky.

Sounds like they are trying to "fix" a problem by tossing parts at it, that is an expensive way to troubleshoot a problem, although replacing the thermostat is not that expensive and can't hurt.

A stuck, [closed] thermostat, rad fan not turning on blown head gasket can/will all lead to overheating.

Info needed...
Any mods to the car?
When does car overheat, when moving or only when stopped?
Have you checked to see if rad fan turns on, [it should at about 200 degrees F or the 1/2 way point on the engine temp gauge]?

Symptoms of a blown HG are white "smoke" from exhaust, coolant in oil, [milky oil] oil in coolant, [need hydrocarbon test kit], bubbling in rad when engine running.

It's a 94 so it may be the water pump.
There may be a restriction, [clogged rad].
Air in cooling system, [bleed it].

You have already done the thermostat, now see if rad fan turns on, easy enough, start engine and let it run, wait for temp. to go up, if rad fan does not turn on, check the rad fan circuit, start by unplugging the ECT switch, [rad fan switch] and jumping the plug. 94

They'll be ok, i agree with FCM in regards to wasting money tho, but as long as they diagnose the problem correctly or take it to get looked at then changing out a head gasket shouldnt be to difficult..
