Default Distributor problems. Advice? (noob)

Please forgive me if I'm not using the right terminology. I haven't had much experience working on my vehicles...

My Crx up an died on me tonight. I took the distributor cap off and found that the rotor bug was loose. The metal contacts inside the cap have been damaged badly, and the little gear has broken teeth! I'm surprised it has ran this long!

Can I just replace the gear or will I need to buy a whole new distributor shaft?
And what other cars/motors use the same distributor as my d16a6 Crx incase I try to find a used one?

Thanks!!

See the broken teeth? What is this part called. If I knock out that pin can it be removed and replaced with replacing the whole distributor shaft?

Thanks guys. I'm totally clueless when it comes to this stuff

Thats the Top dead center / Crank angle sensor. To replace it you'll need to replace the distibutor. In the manual it says "not to disassemble". Maybe theres a way, but I dont know.

sorry I'm no expert when it comes to swaping parts around.

Thanks for the response
So that gear looking thing is a sensor? And I can't just possibly even replace just the whole shaft piece instead?
I really don't think I can afford to replace the whole dizzy right now, unless by some miracle I could do it my self. Unemployed and broke!

I tried to make a good one using two, it can be done but its a pai in the *** and i dunno where you would find the pieces, and you would probably break the camshaft position sensor ( the left of gear two wires goin to it in ur pic) in the process as i did since the thing is old and brittle anyway. You would be money ahead to find a way to get the dizzy. Im $450 in one now on a d15b2 thanks to my bad luck.

There are walkthroughs on the forum, if you are mechanically inclined its not hard at all.

How can i tell if the if the camshaft pos sensor is good? There were broken teeth spining around in there, for quite a while probably, so im worried it is damaged aswell. But if I have to buy a whole new dizzy then it doesn't matter I suppose.

Can I not use parts from a salvage dizzy to fix this one? And how much of a PIA would that be?
Just trying to weigh my options here... Ideally I would just buy a new dizzy, but. I'm strapped for cash

And tim,That's the problem, I am not mechanically inclined...at all lol
But if it's pretty straight forward and not hard to do/remove and install, then just maybe I could pull it off. I don't know any trustworthy mechanics here and I can't afford one anyways

Sorry to double post. Was justbthinking and realized I could also go with a used dizzy from a salvage for cheap, and only have to Buy a new cap and rotor to go with it. That would save me money, but is it a bad idea??

Does anyone know if the gear by its self is replaceable?
And the tps? How do I tell if it's bad, and is it difficult to replace?

A new dizzy is about 150 or more, and I'm not even sure if I can do it.
If I could just replace the broken gear and tps(if needed), then it would save me a lot of time and trouble, and money, right?

Any advice?? Man it sucks being broke!!

For replacement, you can find it on D16A6 engine which included 90-91 EX sedan, and EF Si.

Get one off of craigslist. Any D series that is the same OBD as yours (0 or 1) should work fine. I wouldnt pay more than $50 MAX for one.

Ok so what do you guys think about buying an eBay distributor?
Theres a bunch for around 100, with the cap and rotor. Would cost almost twice as much from the parts store or dealership prices

Ebay distributors can be hit and miss. If you could get a good used one or get the ebay one and swap over the coil and igniter from your distributor would work also.

here is a brand new one. free shipping too. only $130.00 dont be cheap or you may be buying a coil and ignitor.

oh sorry just saw you are short on cash. yeah check the junkyards. although you may end up wasting alot more time trying to find a good one from the junkyard pool of great cars than its worth. good luck getting it going agian. took me a couple weeks to track one down and get it going again.

ebay or craiglist and find you a used one, I can pick up D16Z6 dizzy's for $50 all day, obd0 are cheaper then that. a dizzy off a 88-91 civic/crx HF might work as well but I make no promises
