Default 1989 honda civic hatchback dx- engine swap possible?

First off I'm new to the Honda world and I am wondering what engine I actually have under the hood? Next what Dohc or v tech's would swap with little to no extra parts or even a better hp sohc? I've been looking on jdm tiger imports.my car came with a vTec head and wiring harness in the trunk and intake. My car seems its burning oil like crazy. I did a oil change two weeks ago and drove close to 460 miles and checked three days ago and it was at minimum level. Also I find traces of soot on the hatch. I know the rings are probably going, wanting to change engines instead of a over haul. Car still seems to have great power considering. Lmk
thanks

The FAQS section has a wealth of information on a variety of swaps, look at section 7: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/88-91-crx-ef-civic-frequently-asked-questions-faqs-1508680/

If you want to know what block you have look at the block near the exhaust, below it to the left is a stamp that will say something like d16a6. It sounds like you may have a different head on your block.

Maybe the previous owner was converting to MPFI, finishing up where they left off (with a healthy motor) might be the easiest, personaly I wouldn't waste my time on a D series though espesially if you have to source a new motor.

If you have other questions try a search first, you can usualy find answers much quicker: https://honda-tech.com/search.php

does it say DPFI under the hood on the intake? iff so look up dpfi to mpfi, that will be your first step, (post a pic and we could probably tell you without a doubt)

you said theres a vtec head and intake in the trunk can you tell us the code on it? are you sure its vtec head? (vtec on the valve cover) (code is next to the exhaust ports.

almost and sohc d series will fit in your car with very little effort and if you still have the original motor a D16a6 (easiest swap) would be a good improvement or the best (d16z6 or d16y8) are bother out of a newer Honda and are both vtec engines.

if you cant find a code on the head you have can you send a pick of the valve cover, it can sometimes tell you but they are easily changed between motors.

after you know exactly what you have and what you want the FAQ section will tell you pretty much anything you need to know or just ask if your unclear on something.

the block looks to be a D15b1 and I will have to look at the other head, it may not be a vetch after all, but I will check it and let you know.

(actually the whole car a 97 Honda civic),
for $500. would bolt up to 4spc dx trans? how much work would take to switch.

DX has a 5Spd. thespd comes in the standard hatch but it will bolt up, you just need the cable transmission throw out bearing and the disk to match (88 has a different disk, 89-2000 are all the same) and if you have a 4spd in your car now.

also a D15B1 is the standard Honda civic motor so if your car is a DX your motor and trans have both been changed.

$500 is a steal as long as the motor runs good, if it is a Spd you can use the transmission in it with the Cable to hydro conversion kit.

to put a Y8 in your car after the MPFI conversion you would need to get a new ECU, Dizzy, and convert the car to obd1.
