Boosting a d16y7
Hey all, kinda new here, but I post alot on H-A.net, so I'm not exactly new to the scene. But boost is something I'm trying to learn about, so work with me
I have a '96 Civic Lx sedan, with my good'ol d16y7 inside w/ auto. The biggest reason I like the car is because of the color, and since I got a great deal on it ($3000 from a family memeber), I was stuck with this crappy drivetrain. With that said, getting a new car is out of the question.
So obviously, 106 horses are not enough
Well, this shop in town does swaps, and they gave me this estimate:
for a JDM b16 engine and tranny, all the stuff nessisary for install and a Auto->Manual tranny swap, I'm looking at $4800 installed. Good deal?
but I'm kinda reluctant on doing a swap now, since that'll take almost a year or so to save up for (since I spend money elsewhere, as well as my car).
now, if I don't swap, I may want to go turbo, and I was thinking, if I got an EX intake manifold, what else would I need to fit an EX turbo onto an LX engine (I know some moddification will need to be done from the headers down to the tailpipe). I was thinking it would be better to boost the LX engine since A) it doesn't have Vtec (Back when I was modding my 90 accord, I heard vtec is not the best thing for FI) and B) The LX tranny has a gearing that would benifit turbo (it spends quite a bit of time up in the high end).
I dunno, I'm just trying to get some idea of potencial. What do you think? And just for reference, if I go turbo, I'm not swapping the engine for a b18b. Either I'm doing a swap, or I'm going FI. Unfortunatly, I'm not made of money
basiclly, I just need some info on a custom turbo. If there's any how-to's, that'd kick ***

let a b18b and boost that
4800 for b16 is too "murch"

Dont underestimate the power of the Y7...
you can swap the ex manifold on with little or no problems....
and a greddy ex kit or any other ex kit will work fine on the car, the motors are the same just minus vtec

Turbo & V-tec - (bullsh*t)
I've heard this argument before, V-TEC isn't good for FI, if you believe that you obviously never got a ride in a turbo V-TEC car.
Trust me it matters!
D-series ( the skinny)
If your gonna get the intake mani get the complete y8 head. It's far too easy to swap heads and far too cheap as well ($300). The Y8 will flow so much better than your head, thus giving you spool up and H.P. You should be able to get 200 ponies to the ground if you really want it, with this head.
Bargain basement prices can get you this and a turbo for about 2,000 bills
(ask me how I know).
B-series (The real deal)
Screw the turbo get an I/H/E GSR swap!!!
Trust me if money is tight you DO NOT want to go turbo.
And please, do yourself a favor get a GSR not a B16, tourque is your friend.

so here's my thoughts:
Get an EX I.M. and a new intake.
Get the header-back replaced temporarly with an EX header, high flow cat, and catback exhaust.
save money.
and get a Drag 3 turbo kit
any DX/LX's with boost out there? Whats your setup? And approx. HP?

my setup is in my SIG....but i dont have horespower numbers yet, plus im still not boosted, i have to get some custom piping done before i put it on.
but when we built the motor and with Replika Maschinen we planned on 350-400hp on 9-12psi
but im wondering if i need to up to 14, im loosing confidence, all the ls/vtec boys making power...

HOLY SHIZNIT! I will **** my pants in front of everyone here if I ever see a Y7 do 350-400 HP on only 12 PSI. You're gonna need like 20+ for that kind of power. Unless I am missing something?

well like i said im loosing confidence, but i beleive it can be done....
the right stand alone ecu, the right fuel setup...
but we will see.....im thinking probably around 300 more likely
