'90 Si Timing Belt Replacement
My civic is bone stock, original motor (D16A6) with 219,000 miles, and still runs like a champ. It was in need of a new timing belt as the one that was on it (I honestly don't think it had ever been changed) was in need of replacement. I could literally pull it off the cam gear with my fingers, and whenever the engine was running it would flop around, but somehow it never jumped time. I ordered a new Gates timing belt and water pump and just replaced them both tonight. Initial start up, it ran fine but was making a sort of whining sound that it wasn't making before.
I am running A/C delete, so the only thing being powered by the crank is the alternator, cam and water pump. To me, it sounds like the cam gear is under stress from the timing belt (being that it's tighter than the old belt) and is making that noise I hear, but I'm not exactly sure if that's the issue. If anybody has run into this before and could offer some advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

I did not replace the tensioner, it wasn't making any noise before though. And I didn't know exactly how to adjust the tensioner, but after fiddling around with it I got it. There's a 7mm bolt and the 14mm tensioner pulley bolt that I loosened and it seemed to work. There's a little tab where the spring attaches to the pulley that I could pry on to adjust the slack. I have no idea if that's the right procedure or not but it seemed to work.
