Blown Amp? 2008 Si SDN
Hey everyone, I just joined looking for some expert advice.
Had a fun experience with my stock premium sound system. It went like this:
When leaving the store, I popped the trunk to load some Hopslam. I noticed an umbrella had opened up and I went to close it, but realized it was stuck on the exposed sub (all factory standard equipment). I couldn't see if it was only stuck to the magnet or if it was up into the sub enclosure. It made a popping and static noise while wiggling the metal of the umbrella out. The car was off at this point, and remained off after I got the umbrella out, but the static sporadically continued. The inside of the car did smell like murdered electronics a bit, which made me nervous. I turned on the car, and the back speakers, sub and I think the tweeters up front were not working (verified unscientifically by the stereo balance/fade).
I had to get back to work, and the car was parked for about 2 hours. It started up fine and I drove home. The next day the battery was dead. I let it sit the rest of the day and jumped it that night (last night). I unhooked the sub and rears, just for grins to see if they were draining the battery. This morning the car was dead again, so they aren't the culprit.
Would a fried amp drain the battery? I checked the amp and radio fuses, and they seemed fine. I jumped the gun a bit and am now at the dealer seeing how far my $100 diagnosis will get me. They tried to level-set some expectations that it could get ugly because its electrical. In a perfect world, I would have pulled the amp fuse or unhooked the amp to isolate it as a test. I may tell them to do that when they come back, but wanted to see what you guys thought about it. Any thoughts, experiences with this?
Thanks!
