so i picked up a hatch with a "poor man" in it, it had a spun rod bearing.

upon inspection the one that spun was mated with some ARP rod bolts, it appears as though they were not installed correctly.

the rest of the rods were OEM rod bolts.

only the one that spun had the ARP.

there is about 1/32" gap between the base of the rod and the head of the ARP fastener.

so it appears to me that the previous owner did not take these to a machine shop/ or they installed them incorrectly and he didnt notice.

he gave me an extra set of rods/pistons.

of the extra set, 3 of them have ARP rod bolts installed, never been ran (according to the previous owner)


I have a brand new set of ITR Pistons and Rods, so should I see if my machine shop can extract these rod bolts and install them in the new set.

Or should I just leave them alone and wait for some more rod bolts to come in>??

I'm leaning towards just buying new, but if they are still good after being installed then why wait or waste the money.

 

For $40 or what ever they cost now a days, I would just buy a new set.

 

yeah they're about $85-$100

but I just don't see spending an extra $85 and wasting the time for them to come in when I already have the parts new just installed on the wrong set of rods...

My mistake, the gsr/itr arp rod bolts are about double the cost of a set for an ls bottom end. Still, if you are going to all the trouble to build the engine, why not spend another $70 to ensure critical parts are new. If they were installed improperly to begin with, who's to say they weren't damaged in some way. Just throwing the possibility out there.

Idk dude, it's up to you, but for something like rod bolts, I'd be spending the $70 or $80 to replace them just for piece of mind.

 

i would not reuse, especially when it came from a part that failed.

 

You'd be better off buying new one just to insure that you are not using a faulty piece and ruining your engine. Think of them as an insurance policy

 

Lot of money to spend for arp bolts, just buy them in the end ur mind will b at ease knowin they are new and strong.
