Icon2 odb1 ecu w/ knock board

I just got a p75 odb1 ecu . I was under the impression p75 ecus had a 2nd knock board inside the ecu and it does not. What odb1 honda acura ecus have separate knock boards inside the ecu? I dont think this p75 is knock capable.

I think you must have had the P72 and P75 mixed up.

The following are knock board enabled OBD1 ECU's;

JDM PR3

USDM P30
JDM P30

JDM P61

USDM P72
JDM P72

Thanks for the help and clarification of this issue. A P14 has a knock board also, but is also a untunable ecu.

P13 has a knock sensor board but it is untunable. You can add the knock sensor board to a p75.

Never done or heard of this ECU mod before. Is it as simple as just soldering in the ribbon/knock board? Or are there any other components required to complete the circuit?

b20 has a knock sensor but its obd2

i would think that the "middlemen"components are also missing on p75 board just like vtec components. and it probably wont work in stock mode since theres no program to interpret the knock board output in the oem chip.

Was nice of you to post the link.

It needs both VTEC and KS components added to the board.

Why? Knock sensor technology and algorithms have come a long way in 20 years.

Anything obd1 with a knock board was not meant for knock detection or tuning by Honda

Serious question If its not there to detect knock then why is it called a knock sensor 0_o

I have a odb1 setup knock sensor from factory. If I use a ecu with a knock board it will be able to detect knock. When it does it will throw a code on ecu. I got it so why not use it. I don't really see even in newer cars that the knock sensor does anything else other than detect knock. I know newer ecu would use this information a different way but am I missing something here. Im a little confused why you wouldn't want it.

back in 1992, I can only speculate a little...BUT you have to remember that all of these were calibrated to detect knock in 100% OEM configuration. Oem Pistons, oem rods, oem bore, oem port, oem cams, oem springs, oem exhaust, oem intake, oem chassis, oem mounts...etc etc, you get the picture right?

and really it was there to protect you if you put poor fuel in your car so that it didnt blow up and you didnt have as many warranty issues

in newer cars, knock detection is PURELY for figuring out the octane of the fuel you are using, again so that the general public doesnt blow a motor under warranty when getting bad gas, its also to account for the WIDE VARIETY of fuel and quality out there. there are a few higher end manufacturers that use knock monitoring to do adaptive learning, but that takes WEEKS at a time for the computer to evolve on this and is used in very few applications

it was NEVER intended for you to tune your car using a stock knock sensor on a HIGHLY modified vehicle.

hope that makes sense...

an OBD1 Honda ECU does NOT throw a code when it detects knock...

Ok well i guess it makes no sense at all to use it then thanks for clarification on the subject. Not that i would ever use it for tuning feature for any reason at all. I simply wanted to use it because it was oem equipment there ready to use. I understand what you are saying. I still would like it to work to oem spec.

Let me clarify and say, if you have it all (oem knock sensor mounted and an ECU with the board) then USUALLY its not a bad thing to have...but I certainly wouldnt go out of my way to try and add the circuitry to an ECU that didnt come with it from the factory.

I've upgraded quite few P75 ECUs to operate knock using a P72 knock board.
I've experimented with the P30 and P61 knock board, the P75 won't read them.

IMO you would be better off hooking up a couple EGT sensors or CHT sensors and using a det-can and a wideband O2 to monitor for knock during initial tuning. The stock KS isn't a tool for tuning and it definitely isn't going to save your engine from failure if you don't tune properly.
