my b20 (b16) turbo build (in process)
So I have been out of the honda scene for a little while personally... I have been building and swapping for others the whole time.
I have grown tired of my stock engine 96 dx.
I stumbled across an old ls/v I built for someone about 4 years ago. It had a snapped timing belt, and bent some valves. I picked it up dirt cheap. As i tore into it, I realized how tired the LS short block had become. I knew it was slated for a rebuild. As I scoured CL and Ht looking for a set of cams I saw a ton of turbos for sale, and it got me thinking.
Living in Cali I have 2 choices (well 3 really), I can do a legit swap, and make everything CARB legal, I can do a built swap and pull it out to smog bi annually, or option #3, which is what I have chosen.
I am building the start of what will be a 99-00 si swap "clone". I picked up a 99 SI greddy turbo kit, with CARB sticker. I have successfully, in the past, changed the id on the block to pass the state ref as b16's. So I plan to grind and smooth the front of the block, and re-stamp b16a2 (10mm) and go about smogging it as such. It will not be vtec at the time of having the state ref inspect it, as it would be a dead giveaway with the oil line.
With a b16 head, anyone would be hard pressed to be able to visually spot the difference.
The plan is for as close to 300 whp as i can do with the greddy setup, yes I
have an intercooler. It will run on pump gas, and be a daily driven. So I know my turbo is a limiting factor here. I want to keep costs down as I am a cheeeeeepppp azz. So forget about forged internals, I am going all factory here. Until the other day-
I came across a b20 with JE forged 11 to 1 pistons, and eagle rods. I basically stole it for the price I paid. So now it has evolved to b20 vtec re-stamped as b16, with forged innards, and will be porting the turbo, making my own down pipe (after smog) and see where that gets me. I have all the odds and ends, just no big cams yet.
It will be in a 96 civic coupe, with a GSR open diff trans, and probably built by me 3 inch exhaust. The plan is to still shoot for 300 whp, and do it on my own tune (neptune). I will be taking the pistons to my machinist tomorrow, having him fly cut them to drop compression by about 1.5 points, to get me around 9.5 to one. Toss a hone through the block and get me a set of rings ordered. I will be using king race bearings, they are a bit more forgiving that others.
Ive got injectors, fuel pump, turbo, engine, and tuning... i hope to be able to hit 300 and have room to grow. I have already been advised to get a gt2860rs and use that, but at this time the greddy will do.
any tips, advice, or assistance is always welcome!
