Cooked Distributor Wireing
Hi All,
More information sharing rather than a question.
I pulled the distributor out of the 91 Accord last night to redo the shaft oil seal and O-Ring. Before getting started I reviewed a you-tube video on the subject. *I found the video informative but but for some reason he skipped a section on removing some of the components within the distributor. *No big deal, I figured it out but why go to all that detail regarding the rest of the job and skip that part? *Non the less, it still had a lot of great information and my thanks to the fella who went through the trouble to record and post to help others.
I haven't re-installed the distributor yet, will likely do that later today. *I'm a little concerned about the condition of the wiring inside the distributor. *It looks like the years of heating, cooling and oil have taken their toll as the wire has many cracks on the plastic coating and it's even splitting away in some spots. *I hope that when I install it there are no shorts and it starts! *Even if it does run I am worried about the long term reliability of wiring in that condition.

I would personally go to a junk yard and try and find another dizzy w/o that problem. A preventive maintenance thing just in case

if you fixed the oil leak, there is a "liquid electric tape" sold at freight harbor and autozone, it could potentially be a fix till you go to the recycle yard
First off i did install the distributor and the car started right up despite the wiring issue.
Canadian junk yard prices on average are half of new parts at the dealer...$500 distributor at dealer=$250 at junk yard...not going to happen unless I'm painted into a corner.
Thanks for the tip on the liquid electric tape! I will pick some up if for no other reason but to have it in my bag of trick when needed.
I picked up a 1992 Accord last week for a donner (parts) car. It has a distributor but the coil is on the outside of the cap. I'm not sure if it will work on the 91 but I may have to look into it if the stock cap craps out.
