Popcorn under the hood. 90sedan
Sup forum. I was driving home last night from school. Exited the freeway and stopped at the light. When I started up again, I went to 2nd and I heard a pop noise, like a giant popcorn kernal, or like a backfire sound. Thought it was a tire but the car shut off with I believe just the battery light on. I didn't think it was the battery because I still had power to everything until numerous times of trying to start the car. I tried to push and pop the clutch but I heard the same popping noise. It's not multiple but just one deep sounding one. Jumping did nothing either. At first, it would try to turn over but it got weaker after each try to where it doesn't even try anymore. Thought a spark plug blew up or something so I checked them all and they were all drenched in oil. Any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.
there is no way anyone could diagnose what you just said. the oil on the plugs could be bad gaskets, so that doesnt really prove anything. and that noise could be translated to anything
your car getting weaker to turn over? alternator?

Check the rotor in the distributor cap. sometimes the set screw backs out and the rotor spins freely - all kinds of bad ignition.
Take the valve cover off and then the upper timing belt cover. Pull on the timing belt and see if it has broken.

since it still does this after a push start It sounds like it may be an internal issue. It could be a flywheel/clutch issue, or a engine issue.
Pull the starter off (disconnect the battery first) and have a look in the starter hole to see if the flywheel is damaged. You can put it in reverse (or is it fifth gear going forward) and push it backwards to rotate the flywheel so you can check the whole flywheel. Its possible your clutch disintegrated and bunged up the flywheel.
See if your motor can still rotate, put a ratchet on the crank pully and see if it will turn (counterclockwise), you can remove the spark plugs for less resistance. If you cant turn the engine by hand theres something broken in there.

But if it's making those popping noises every time you're engaging the clutch, you'll probably want to pull your tranny off anyways.
Have you gotten around to checking?
A long time ago when I was young and very dumb. My first very first honda jumped time and I didnt know it and kept cranking. Bending all valves intake and exhaust on my low mileage sohc A6. I will never forget the sound it was as if I had a popcorn popper under the hood as I cranked away like a moronic crack-head. It was'nt a cheap fix neither.
^^^ Ouch. Had a family friend who's a mechanic check her out and valves 2 and 3 were very low on compression. He said I can cheap out and temp fix it by replacing the head gasket or go in for a valve job and the head gasket. I was planning on selling the car before this happened so I might end up just selling/ junking it. Thanks for all the input and feedback guys!
