i wasnt sure if it was d17a1 or 2.
i know the block is a2. but on my old civic i had a mini me and it had no vtec so i wasnt sure if i had the same situation here cause i just bought the car and i have no idea if that just a head that fits or a d17a2 head.

and i dont want to like pay a machine shop to machine the head and make it not driveable in the mean time, so im just going to buy a rebuilt/resurfaced head and do the whole cooling system since idk when it got done last.

so.... you have no useful input to add then?

i CLEARLY said i dont know much about civics. i just know how to work on cars. and i just want mine to be dependable so all that vtec and stuff means nothing to me as long as it drives.

So whats your question then?....is this thread not about identifying the motor?

Valid question...

If you don't care what Vtec is and only care if the car drives... Why try to do a head swap?

besides the SRI (Short Ram Intake) and the headers (not counting the painted red cover), all seem to be stock that is visible from the pic (cannot tell if it is the original engine, tho, anything could have happened)

in other words, D17A2 engine. head can be ID by the VTEC solenoid (half hidden behind the red part (on the left side of the picture)..
so stock EX engine is what me and all the others above think it is. (from what we can see)

im trying to do the head swap so i can replace the head gasket. instead of having to wait for a machine shop to resurface it im just going to buy a redone head online. im 70% sure its a swapped engine, so idk how many miles are on it or when the head gasket was last replaced so i wanna do it before it becomes a problem, especially since i am getting tax money back.

thank you for all the answers though.

You just said you didn't care about all that "Vtec stuff" and "as long as it drives" your fine with it but you want to swap a head for performance? There's no heads to swap.....

Why are you 70% sure it's a swapped motor? It's as stock as a soccer mom's mini van bro

it was clear and apparent, but it seemed like we were going off topic and straying far from the main question... no offense, and i hope none was taken.

None taken. OP just needs to get his head out of his ***.

I have NO idea why you'd think this was a motor swap? Best motor for this car would probably only be the D17a2, If you even want to call it a good motor...
