Default 00 Civic Keeps Blowing Wires

My wife has a 00 Civic EX (sorry I don't remember the engine code, but can get it). December 2011 it started misfiring like crazy under low/mid acceleration and wouldn't run for crap. I had recently done a tune up plugs/wires/cap/rotor/fuel filter and did not suspect thoe to be the culprit. So I replaced the MAP sensor, cleaned/checked the IAC valve, adjusted the valves etc.. Finally gave up and did another tune up, also changed the coil, and it ran fine til a couple weeks ago.

Now it is doing the same thing again a year later! Doesn't matter if it is hot/cold whatever it sputters like hell around 2-3k especially while under a load (going up a hill etc..)..

I don't mind doing a tune up once a year if I have to, but worried their might be another issue that could shut the car down all together. Is there something that could be causing these parts to crap out so quick? I'm assuming it is the wires going out? I had Belden on it, and last year I think I put Autolite wires on (yea I know, it was the only place open at the time..).

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Why do you say that your "Civic Keeps Blowing Wires"?

Post all CEL codes. Then reset the ECU and take a drive. When the CEL turns on again, pull the code(s) again. You are only interested in troubleshooting codes that repeat.

Why did you replace the MAP sensor?

Check whether the rotor screw has come loose.

Remove the ICM and have AutoZone test it for you (free service).

Wires keep going bad somehow, at least I think thats whats goin on.

Last year when it did this it had several misfire codes.

I scanned it last night and there was only one code I think the code was P1399, multiple misfire. I reset it and drove probably 20 miles and no code yet, but it is misfiring. Not quite as bad as last time, but it is still rough. I will check the things you suggested, I'm pretty positive I'm gonna throw some wires at it and it will work fine though.

I replaced the MAP sensor because the genius at AZ told me that was my problem with the car last year the first time it started doing this.

Okay, just speculating.

The wires are pretty new, right? If so, they're not a good fit.

Unless the rotor screw came loose, I think the ICM is bad. But have it tested.

Wires have about 15k on them, one year old. ICM is the only thing I did not replace last year, but it ran fine for a yeaer with what I did replace, now doing the same thing. I will get it tested and see what they say though.

Do the plugs, cap, rotor and coil also have 15K miles?

Yes, all replaced last time it started misfiring.

Gotcha. Inspect the cap and rotor and resistance test the coil.

Still have AutoZone test the ICM.

I still don't favor the idea of bad plug wires, but I can't rule them out. You can resistance test them and also look for plug wire spark arcing at night. But again, I have doubts about involvement of 15K-mile plug wires.

I did not have time to do much else after work last night, but I did pick up and install a new set of plug wires. It fixed the problem, and the car drove just as it did before the issue started last night and this morning.

There was no sign of arcing, burned wires, cracking or anything, contact points look good on the old wires and I always use dielectric grease to install.

I guess I will finish a complete tune this weekend and get the ICM tested.

What could be causing my wires to do this repeatedly?!? They were a little too long so they were a little floppy, but not crossed up. Problem seems to progress fairly rapidly when it shows up.

I would recommend that you buy OEM plug wires from Honda.
