So I'm reading a lot on crankcase breathers and pcv ventilation. I know its important and am curious as to how I could modify the system for good measure. I see more pro's than con's and its relatively cheap to do. Instead of a catch can I'm thinking a different approach.

Would it work if I put a filter in the typical spot of my f22b1 valve cover and then stuck a clear in line fuel filter in between the pcv and the IM? Would it work if I put steel wool instead of the filter in the in line fuel filter?

This set up would prevent any oil from getting in the intake and still maintain the ventilation right?

I'm also suspecting that the crankcase gases are throwing off my IAT sensor as my readings are pretty high for a CAI set up. Could be from a bad PCV valve causing the gases to go in through the intake pipe?

 

And a catch can would be placed between the IM and the PCV?

 

I think I will end up making a small catch can then. Theres not much space and I dont have a turbo so there not a huge need for one. Thanks

 

There are systems that use a wick type substrate (like your stainless steel pot scrubbers) to pull the oils out of suspension, but are mounted vertical above the valve cover. Every time the engine is shut off, the oil drains back into the engine. If the oil has nowhere to go, it will eventually fill up your "expansion zone" and slurp oil into the engine, causing more damage than if it operated normally.

Is there a problem you are trying to fix, or just wanting to perform an upgrade?

Upgrade, but Ive worked with the IM a lot though and I do notice oil deposits in there

 

I would recommend the catch can. It has already been engineered and is simple enough to integrate. If you really want to get fancy, you could put a Smart Emissions Reducer in the PCV line.

Thats interesting. It looks expensive though. Plus I like making things myself. I wanna make a small catch can cuz I dont think there will be too much oil going through there anyway since theres no turbo. I'm trying a ghetto rig with an inline fuel filter, steel wool and a small vile under it.
Any better designs come to mind that doesnt take up too much space?

 

I ended up with probably 40 of these canisters, already powder coated. I drilled & tapped a few holes and made my own. I've converted about 3 of these cans into catch cans.

yeah, thats a simple enough design, im just trying to work with room so i dont have to run the hoses so far. I want one right next to or on the IM. I gotta find a container thats small enough
