L3 transmission
the refreshing of a L3 transmission is proving to be a bit of a problem. some of the parts are no longer available. aside of all the ebay rebuild kits for the bearings and not so great syncros has anyone had luck finding parts for the L3. number three in the view . Is there anything else that I could use in replacement for this gear?

i am wondering if anyone has in fact used other gears to replace gears from the older si transmission from newer d series transmissions that have a better chance of being available new from honda. i am looking mainly to refresh the 2nd and 3rd gear. forgive me if this seems remedial. i have done quite a bit of searching and none of what i have found really pertains to this exact subject. are the gears out of d series transmissions compatible?

the countershaft gearset forsecond gear is still available from the dealer. http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine...2-PL3-903.html
Have you clearanced the synchronizers yet? What is the condition of the metal ring (called a blocking ring) that is attached to the synchronizer. Look for beveled wear on one side of the ring, you can flip the ring over and use the other side if the synchronizer wear isn't too bad, measure to determine if you need to replace that. The grinding starts with that ring.
Take pictures of the engagement dogs on the gears, and hub/slider. They can be slightly reformed with a fine file worst case scenario.
Was there any particular shifting/performance issue? Condition of clutch disk and splines should also be checked.

There has not been a performance issue actually it was working fine. I had taking it apart for the input bearing to be replaced. which is i believe fairly common for the age of the piece. It was becoming quite noisy. The gear and the components near were all in shape of a 23 year old transmission. A little banged up. I have owned the car for 8 years and have an exedy organic clutch and flywheel so it grabs it up pretty tight, and is probably wearing things down quicker than they need to. some filing and fluffing could get everything to be in shape of putting it back together. im sorry i dont have it in front of me for a photo. It is more to have longevity of the piece and to not be taking it apart for hopefully another 23 years. The second gear set is not available from honda apparently backorder. this is why im looking for any other d series transmission components that could be used cross platform. It works perfect this is more a sprucing up and trying to make it last forever attempt.

I understand, believe me i dont want to be putting more money into the effort. but it has become the issue at hand unfortunately. the options are, either fluff it up in there, close it back up and hope it keeps on keeping on. or, find as much as i can of the 2nd and possibly third gear sets to feel comfortable about closing it back up for hopefully a good deal of time without some type of problem maybe a few years down the line when really nothing is available. The transmission is cable type which the vehicle is already engineered to work with and works with any other D series usdm motor if i chose to get a newer motor. with the idea of keeping this platform, rebuilding the transmission seems to make sense for me. Im not even considering a hydro conversion which would have to be done to use a newer transmission. I am hoping some of the newer gear sets from those transmissions would fit being as they are still available and if it fits in the old cable type casing, that would be a great deal . Is this possible to do?

i cannot help you with swapping the internals of a transmission, unfortunately. i also don't want to beat a dead horse, but considering the pain you are going through now to find parts for a frankenstein unit, why not consider a hydro conversion? not only you will get a newer unit, which has parts available, you also gain more options for clutches.
i am beating my L3 until it stops spinning (it whines like no tomorrow) and will install a hydro kit to be used with my choice of a transmission.

it does not sound bad, though I do enjoy the feel of the cable type. if it is possible to use some internal components I would like to keep the cable type in the game. I believe I am not so sure about the hydro conversion kits that I have seen and heard about. I would like to keep the vehicle running the stock specs for a bit more time. if anyone could shed light on this subject?
I a using a "hydro" clutch in my cable transmission. the cost and hassle of converting to hydro is not worth it if you ask me. Figure $100+ on the new mounts/brackets, cost of a newer transmission...which should also be opened up and inspected as well (after all the newest one is still over ten years old), then add the $200+ for the kit that allows the cbale to activate the hydro clutch OR custom build a kit to use all hydraulic parts from the clutch pedal and so on. Now if your transmission was completely grenaded it might be worth it, but if you just have some worn parts, i would take pics of the stuff you suspect (make sure they are very clear pics) and post them on on the transmission forumon d-series.org and see if you really need to replace those parts.
yes this is how I feel too. anyone know if some other d series transmission parts will work in the good old L3 case? I am getting to feel like it may be the best idea to just keep running the stack of gears the way they stand. It is running quite well. I believe it is some type of reaction to the idea of the parts drying up for this platform and not wanting to accept the idea. i dont know.

does anyone know what the newer D series transmission components dimensions are compared to the older L3 case components and if there are any that could be used in the old case?
