Default with regards to carbon fiber hatches.

Looked up carbon fiber hatch and found these threads

Lots of comments but unless I missed it, people are really only saying that the cf hatch isn't much different.
It really seems like a lot of speculation without anyone hard facts. Does anyone know *with certainty* the weight one could save with a lexan/cf hatch over the stock?

Just tried to look for some answers but came up with nothing.. I would def think from experience of taking the rear hatch off before that you would def benefit and save some weight. Carbon fiber is strong and really wouldnt worry all that much about using the stock glass like everyone is saying. If you go lexan Id def for sure say it would be worth it. But if you do that you would lose the rear defroster, if you dont care about that.

Is this for drag racing or road course/autocross?

If for RR, you dont want to remove weight from the rear, you want to remove it from the front to get the balance correct.

If for Drag, go for it lol

F22,
Technically a daily driver but for this convo we can assume RR.

I get what you're saying about front to rear balance but I'm a bit skeptical that this would overshadow the benefits of decreased weight so high up from the center of gravity.

I read a thread where a guy used a sheet of lexan to completely cover the space where his hatch used to be. Maybe I should do that and then add a few lbs where the spare tire used to be for balance? hah

I saw that too.

The guy saved like 40lbs.

I've wanted to try that also...

And weight savings offers multiple benefits, regardless of where you remove it.

im guess most of the weight is in the glass but there is still a decent amout of weight in the metal part of the hatch. i was at the junk yard the other day and saw a hatch lying on the ground with the glass broken out. i picked it up just to see and it was heavier then i thought it would be.

10-15lb weight savings, right where you need it.

Not saying the hatch wont help, but that is a LOT of money. I would just remove the hatch all together if I was really going after that last tenth on track. And that would be AFTER removing every other thing in the interior.

i did my carbon hatch this summer i will be doing up a nice diy this spring when i open up my build thread once again. I am so far behind there. i was cheap and didnt want to buy pre cut lexan so i cut and painted my own boarder. anyways the difference is pretty significant. i can carry my hatch with one finger.
