so my car wouldn't start today. was able to drive it home after pushing in the clutch a couple times. the upper clutch switch is a pain to get to but i know that is my problem. is there a easy way to get to it? i been searching and found to look for rubber/plastic on the floorboard. there is plastic pieces on the floor. when i push the clutch switch button and turn the ignition my car will start. so it looks like it's intact. question is does the broken plastic attach to the clutch pedal itself? i couldn't see that area and even had my head stuck all the way back on the floorboard. should i just bypass the switch?

 

Yea not one of Honda's better ideas, it is the "Clutch Interlock Switch" [CIS] pin stopper, it is a small "hard" plastic plug, the plugs into a hole on the clutch bracket, [right where the tip of the CIS hits when clutch pedal is up] it gets brittle over time and falls apart, [plastic pieces on the floor].

It is actually two bad ideas by Honda, the second is not making the plug out of better material, [stronger plastic, or even metal] the first was putting the hole in the bracket in the first place.


as you already know it is a bit of a pain to get to it, but it is doable, all you have to do is get the tip of a finger, [or two] on the hole in the bracket, you do not have to see it, just feel it.

Take a dime out of your pocket, put a good "gob" of JB WELD on one side of it, use the tip of your finger(s) to place the dime over the hole in the clutch bracket, [gob side towards the hole] let the JB WELD set up, done, and you will NEVER have that problem again. 94

 

thanks for the input. you always seem to come thru when i have questions. i'll take a look at it in the morning. i read on another thread that the clutch pedal mount comes off with FOUR BOLTS? would it be easier to remove the whole assembly and do it that way? i searched and i don't see those "pin stoppers" sold online or at autozone.

 

also does it matter which side of the clutch braket the dime goes on? front or back (firewall side)?

 

Don't remove bracket. Just lay on your back and look up. Pretty straight forward

Back side, as it hit's it pushes the pin in

 

You want the pin to hit the dime, not go through the hole and hit the dime. 94

 

Another idea is to take a plastic interior clip, the ones that are flat on top, and push it thru the hole. I did this on mine, works/fits perfect, haven't had a problem since.

 

had to use a dime and two nickels stuck together. wouldn't push the switch with just the dime and added the nickels to it. i started it once and letting the adhesive set, if this works it'll be the best 20 cents i've spent on this car!

So damn true.. I had this happen to me, but with the brake switch... I came out and my car was DEAD.. nothing happening.. quick glance in the floor board and seen the pieces broken all over my floor mat. Cheap fix though

 

I just want to say that this was FANTASTIC advice. Prior to discovering that it was the clutch switch, I tested my ignition switch (it passed), and plugged in an old main relay (with cracking cold solder joints) trying to hunt down why the darned car wouldn't start.

Anyhow, once I realized it was the switch, and found B20ztek's BRILLIANT suggestion, I had to use forceps to hold the interior clip while guiding it into the hole. Once I got the clip in the hole, I used a flathead screwdriver to pop it into place. This should never be a problem again.

Sorry to bring an old thread back, but just wanted to give credit where credit is due, and maybe help someone else out...

 

As a permanent fix I removed the bracket completely, ground the head of a bolt really thin, put a nut on the back side and tightened it down. I should never have to worry about it again. Gave me a chance to clean the brake fluid from the leaking clutch master as well while I was down there.
