I just had my 96 EK totalled from an accident and I went and purchased a 2002 Civic EX. I noticed that the 5spd makes like a turbine noise in gears 1-4 while the clutch is engaged. The car has a new clutch installed so I am wondering if its what I have been reading about the DX models and an input shaft bearing? I have a 3 month warranty and have just over 2 months left on it. What do you all think? If I am driving down the road 4th gear or higher, there is no whirring noise but if I am at a complete stop and take off no matter how hard, it makes a MMMMEEEEAAAARRRRRR sound lol.

Thanks everyone.

Rick

i talked to two transmissions shops that work on 5 speeds and one told me that it sounds like the input shaft bearing and they would recommend replacing all the bearings and the other said it sounded like a gear issue. looks like we will see.

Wow no replies. Well, for those who search looking for answers. Here is what happened.

I bought the car used, from Triforce Motors in Thornton Virginia, home of the 5000 car. I got the car for 4943.00 and it came with a 3 month 3000 mile service warranty that covered 1000 in repairs to specified parts. I test drove it and the car made this weird growling noise. I drove about 2000 miles over the last month and the noise was getting irritating so I came here and I searched.

The common answer on other threads was input shaft bearing.

I had Hollywood Transmission in Hollywood, MD do the warranty work and he pulled the transmission out same day, ordered all new bearings and Honda MTF, and he showed me that afternoon a really noisy input shaft bearing and the opposite end bearing was going bad as well. The parts came in a few hours later a day early than he expected and then he tells me that he is going to try to get my tranny rebuilt before he goes home. This was at 6pm . He told me that I could have my car back this afternoon.

Total repair job 1218.87. Minus the 1000 payment the warranty people paid, I only have to pay 218.87 to have a rebuilt 5spd!

Thanks

Rick.

just before i read that last post you made i was going to say input shaft bearing. chances are, though, that he is over pricing in a gigantic way. if i were you i would ask to see your old gears and synchros. he might have just checked them to see if they were OK and no replaced them. normally they only go bad through continuously HARD shifting. i drove my last transmission pretty hard but when i pulled the tranny, it was still fine. either way, i am almost 100% he is charging you about $750 too much.(in my opinion of course)

Parts total came to over 500.00 and labor was at 89.00 hour. Warranty paid 1000 I paid 218. I saw and kept all old bearings. 3 were bad. All 5 came directly from the Honda dealer. Fluid was Honda as well. He also showed me a fraying drive belt and a negative cable that had this blueish green color throughout. Recommended I replace them soon. I was pretty happy. I know the warranty company required the hours to be based on national repair standards.
