Default How to tell if your Power Steering pump is bad ?

My harmonic balancer took a dump last week and I'm about complete with the repair. I noticed when spinning my power steering pump, it feels a little tough to spin? Could this be the reason why the balancer came apart? My alternator and compressor both spin ok.

I could go to the auto parts store and compare spinning the two, but having one in the system may inherently feel different due to the fluid or pressure in the pump?

It looks like I can get new ones for about $80. Should I just go ahead and replace it while I have everything out?

Prior to the balancer going out, did you hear any weird noises like a quiet grinding noise? How many miles is on it and its it leaking any fluid? When its in the car with fluid it should still spin fairly easily but it won't rotate freely like a new one without fluid.

No...I don't remember hearing any grinding sounds. The car has approx 163K and i don't think the pump has ever been replaced. I don't see any visible leaking oil around the pump or hoses.

Your pump is probably still good then. Mine had 263,xxx on it and it still works good. If you replace it now i would consider that preventive maintenance. But the new pump could possibly go out before the stock one. Hell you could get another 160,xxx out of the stock one and the replacement could only go for 80,xxx just really depends. I would leave the stock one till it dies, personally.

Do a flush and refill with fresh power steering fluid.
